Took a punt on this Specialized Hardrock GX Sport for Β£25 delivered off weeBay.
It's arrived and none of the awful things that could be wrong have happened. Lots of rust everywhere, as the pictures show. My main concern is the tapering slot at the top of the seat tube. Is that normal?
Not really sure what to do with it...

Looks like its been over tightened.

That's what I feared...
Google tells me the seatpost dia. is 30.9, but a rough measurement of the opening suggests about 30mm. No measurable ovalisation tho.
I'm going to end up shoving this in the garage and forgetting about it.

Wouldn't have thought it was a problem, just open it up and shove the right size post in, no euph

Just get it reamed. If you take it to SBC or Stayer Cycles they will have the tools. Also get a shim to fit 27.2 seat post.I did that on my Rockhopper. Totally worth it. Lovely frames these..

No silly clutch mech
I rode one today for the first time (on a road bike that is) - it's dead silent, I love it. With a double though.

Good choices, the Thorn are usually a little stiffer which help in that sizes.

Bought this Mercian King of Mercia from a friend in Italy a couple of years ago, hadn't been used in 30 years and was 50/50 about whether it was salvageable, but it came with a few nice Nuovo Record bits so took a punt on it. Later found out that the bike was originally put together by Harry Hall (who put Tommy Simpson back on his bike) so a nice bit of history thrown in.
Had the frame repaired and repainted by Dan at Cole Coatings, needed new wheels and saddle, and since this pic was taken I put modern skeleton calipers on after a couple of squeaky bum, will I ever stop!?, moments, but they fit with the rest so only a close look would show they aren't original. Also, can't believe the picture I took was during the 5 minutes I had the bars at the wrong angle. Still really happy with the results.

Bloody hell that is nice.

^ Very nice! Can you thread the rear cable slightly more rear-wards, so that it's curving past the top of the seat tube?
-

Have done so now, this was very much a 'wow everything's on and I'm excited' shot, hence the slightly messy cabling and jaunty bar angle.

On a full carbon frame, shifting under power, the click as you shift really resonates through the frame, itβs quite satisfying

Still nice on a stiff alloy frame though :)

Carbon frame + disc!

Nothing compares to clicking down a few gears with a Campag thumb shifter and hearing it resonate through a nice deep set of Heds.
Clipping in with a disc sounds decent too.

Clipping in on my caad with 16nm Keo Blades is like a sonic boom

New commuter/winter Bike/cx race Bike.
Not really that much of a project, install power meter, put non flared bars on, change saddle put second set of road wheels and Iβm done!
Saddle is a bit of a boat anchor so thinking about changing for something a little more svelte.
