  • I just had some guy from a company called "skilled force" come round to tell me that his company want to install some free insulation in my house. Apparently there's some sort of green EU initiative to get houses with bad insulation up to scratch. Does this sound legit or will I be burgled/ kidnapped if they come back?

  • They're probably going to hammer frozen sausages into your lawn while you sleep

  • Where are you? You should be able to find out on your local council website if there is. I doubt there still is at the moment because most of the green initiatives got cut about 6 months after they started. I think only some parts of Wales will still do a free boiler upgrade.

  • Any clues which model this is? Serial number started with 11... looking for a leather stitcher (preferably 29k) but never seen one like this before. (In Italy so not as easy as UK market.)

  • I guess they're rebranded somethings, you'd probably need pics to find out what. Just get new wheels.

  • Or file the cassette.

  • That's what I thought

  • Thanks for the responses all

  • No you can’t. 8 speed is incompatible with 9/10/11 speed. Some 9/10/11 speed hubs won’t take an 11 speed cassette as the lockring won’t get enough purchase to tighten enough.

  • 9 speed would take some butchering I think: https://branfordbike.com/new-page-1

  • Ah yeah, you're right 8 speed won't, but 11 speed should fit on any 9 speed campag freehub.
"all Campagnolo-compatible 9/10-speed freehub bodies also are compatible with Campagnolo 11-speed cassettes

  • I know they should, but some 9/10 speeds aren't compatible, even if they claim they are. I had a lovely pair of wheels with Tune hubs that become redundant when I moved to 11 speed, as I couldn't get a cassette on them. Tune admitted via email that some of their older hubs weren't compatible.

Most now should be fine though, just be aware that compatibility isn't always guaranteed.

  • anybody witha 56cm straggler able to tell me roughly what length cable I need if I'm running hydro? will be 11 speed ultegra FWIW

  • Nah that's consumer grade stuff. This is/was an industrial machine.

We called the grandson and he said it's one of a couple Singers that his grandpa has in the workshop. Apparently the grandpa, now in a hospice, is a cobbler.

One of the machines has been promised to a doctor/dentist as furniture, but hopefully I have my pick on which one I take.

If I'm lucky the other will be a 29K. The one in the pic looks like an ancient blake stitcher.

  • Ooh nice, going into business?

  • Maybe yea. I have a pile of leather scraps and training as a cobbler (and an arts degree) going to waste.

Thinking to do basic repairs and start making some leather pouches, bags, maybe watch and cufflink boxes. Literally anything that I can make and use/sell. I'd hope to source synthetic materials toward cycling accessories if there is a market for that too - found it impossible to get waist/hip bags the size I wanted at a price I was willing to pay.

Will see how it pans out.

  • I will be selling my singer 111g157 needle feed machine if you are after a flat bed machine.

Like this but with a reverse:

Have a load of cordura, vinyl, webbing and itw buckles as well left over from my days making messenger bags.

  • Phwoar. Yes would be interested if I wasn't setting up in Italy.

How much material do you have?

Not sure it's economical to post, nor to carry as luggage next flight back for family. Interested tho.

  • Hah - yeah I think you would need to drive it down.

The head alone weighs around 30kg, table probably 15kg and same again for the servo motor.

Not a huge amount of material (150mm wide rolls) - probably 7m of red, 6m grey cordura, 2 or 3 metres of orange pvc tarp and a bit more white. Oh and 9m or so of hypalon plus loads of 50mm and 25mm polyester webbing.

  • Haha yea. I remember us trying to budge the 29k patcher (inc treadle) a few inches across the floor...and agreeing to work around it instead.

Mmm definitely could do with some materials like that, don't even have a price list here to see what the net worth is at the moment. Pop me a pm? Maybe I can make it work one journey if it's good for you.

  • Tubular tyre question:

What would be the minimum recommended rim width if I planned on using a 28mm tyre?

Would I have to have more modern ultra wide rims or will I get away with my 3-4 year old Zipp 202 rims?

Never used anything larger than a 23mm tubular in the past.
