R785 + XT(R) rear derailleur is a sure thing! Just don't expect a front road derailleur to work with it.
You will need wires, a battery and a junction box with a charging port. Everything you need know is in here: e-tubeproject.shimano.com/pdf/en/HM-CC.3.3.0-00-EN.pdf

Has anyone successfully got Shimano ST-R785 to work with a XT/XTR rear derailluer? Foolishly meddling with the thought of going Di2 for my next build. If so, what parts (other than the shifters and the rear mech) do I need to make it all come together? Presently, I know nothing about Di2.
