Why not just use clamp-on bottle cages?
-

That^.
You'd need to braze-in some bosses, the tube won't be thick enough to be tapped. You could ask Mario Vaz to sort it, he has a repairer who could presumably do this no problem.

I suspect in the majority of cases nutserts or rivnuts for our american friends are used. If you have the correct tooling these are very easy and cheap to fit.
Bring your frame to Hampton court and I will do it for free.

Why not just use clamp-on bottle cages?
Because I think theyre clunky and ugly...:P
@Skully Do you know the kind of price I'd be looking at for 2 sets of fittings?
@freezing77 thanks for the offer man, gimme a couple of days and I will get back to you on that, and we can maybe arrange a time etc...

If i can't get braze ons, I might just do rivnuts and then epoxy them a little to stop them coming loose/turning. I think I might just get away with that...

more grief than it's worth - clamp on cage will allow you return it the smooth lines later if you wish.
how about TT style behind the saddle bottle cage?

ha... i use those Elite VIP bottle cage mount things http://nordicgroup.us/cageboss/#11._Elite_VIP_Universal_Cage_Mount_22-50mm
They're cheap enough from parker international, work fine and are't too much of an eyesore. Plus alot easier than messing around with whatever else is on offer. I had tried hose clips - fail , and bought a profile 2 behind the saddle holder, which worked fine until i hit a grate and a bolt on the mount snapped. Leaving me to ride home carrying it and 1 bottle (other broke on impact) never trusted it since and found myself constantly checkin it was still there.
think its a good point about being able to go back to clean lines if you want to.

I got rivnuts inserted in the end. They are excellent, and hopefully shouldn't turn in their holes...touchwood
huge thanks @ Freezing77 -

Hello, bringing up a really old thread. Are there any builders or workshops about London that would be able to insert a rivnut on the cheapish? Bought a frame with a lost boss and would like a cage back
-
• #16
Do it yourself for free, I’ll give you a rivnut

Could I have one (actually, four. Please.) or get a recommend where to buy them? Not getting along with strap-on's... oo-er, etc.

I was supposed to send some to someone, was it you? I lost them before managing it. Anyway, I have some more lying around somewhere. Sure

But I need a tool too, right? DIY tools look a bit complex for my modest means
If not then that'd be great -

I've done it with a hub and skewer. Put two cages on my road bike by doing it.

Right, am on it. Have a spare steel frame for practicing on. I should buy the aluminium ones (there's three options at the link)?
Hey guys,
I just bought an old frame and want to do a fg conversion. I'm planning to get the frame stripped/powdercoated etc, but I also want to add some water bottle fittings.
so 2 questions:
Are there any framebuilders in and around london who might be able to do it or cheap (I found bob jackson do them, but theyre located in the middle of nowhere and charge a fortune)?
Is it possible to do them ghetto style? I was thinking just drilling into the frame and tapping a thread into the holes for the M4 nuts, having measured and marked carefully etc. Its a steel frame so im not that worried about stripped threads, but are there any problems doing it this way? (structural integrity?) Also, rivnuts maybe? but then I would need to get/borrow tools.
Cheers
