  • We outsource dipping and get mixed results because there are so many variables.
I'd hate to give any kind of definitive answer because it doesn't really exist.

  • I wouldn't hold you to it haha. But thanks

  • In terms of holding the frame while it is being painted, what is recommended? I guess a seatpost won't work as I'd want to remove the clamp to paint, unless you go for one slightly larger than designed

  • There are a bunch of options and they are probably dictated by your workshop space to some extent.

If you look at some of the videos of Spray.Bike users, many simply hang a frame by a wire or cord and move it around and deal with the potential obstacle of the string.

If you need it to be static for graphic application and such you can try either of these...

Park Tools (used to) make a really great tool that made gripping a frame in a stand quite easy but they've become a little expensive.

You can use something like this in your seat tube and then hold it in your stand.

Having a work stand that can articulate means you can flip and rotate the bike as you need to because of course, spray cans don't work at every angle.

  • Expanding wedge type thing - like a quill stem?

Had typed reply but didn't hit send.

    What he said ^

  • Thanks for the tip. The quill - ahead setup looks like best solution for me. My stand clamp can rotate 360

  • If it's just a bit of surface rust, waxoyl or similar should sort it - use a hairdryer to warm the frame tubes and make sure it gets to the extremities. Bob Jackson recommend Dinitrol ML, which comes in an aerosol; you can get an extension hose which makes it easy to get into all the nooks and crannies. Both Waxoyl and Dinitrol seem popular with Land-Rover enthusiasts, so they are both presumably fairly tenacious.

  • These seem like rust proofing sprays. Which I'd need anyway so thanks. But I'm not sure they'd treat existing rust would they?

  • According to the Dinitrol can it treats existing corrosion and delays its progress; AFAIK Waxoyl is also full of corrosion inhibitors. I wouldn't rely on them to treat really heavy patches, but if it's just the normal orange surface dusting you get in a frame it should be fine.

  • Also check out the heavy methil thread for spray.bike advice.

When I used it I stripped the frame, filled, smoothed etc and primed. My impression is that the colours have different performances - flouro orange was really dry and powdery, wouldn't fancy trying to get it to stick on preexisting clean shiny paint; quasar went on nice and smooth; dark green was in-between. Other experiences on here are also mixed - I'd prep as much as possible to try to ensure success.

  • I made a stand for Dan (and am working on @hoops now I promise ;)) that holds them by the BB. Doesn't work in my booth as it's too small, so I just hold them on a broom stick in the head tube.

  • The amount I’m going to pay you for this stand is going down month by month. Take as long as you want, as eventually, you’ll have to pay me for it.

  • I think we got there a few months ago 🤣🤣🤣

  • What stops the frame rotating?

    Just the clamping force?

  • Magnets, so it's useless on carbon fibre frames.

  • I made a stand for Dan (and am working on @hoops now I promise ;)) that holds them by the BB.

That looks very similar to one of my stands:

Except the base of mine is an IKEA speaker stand. It's a bit wobbly. I keep meaning to make a better one. And to modify the clamp so that you can spin the frame round. It's on my list of things to do but, as ever, it's a long, long list.

  • Yeah, annoyingly invisible is a handle on the m8 nut, so you can lock it off very easily.

  • Can the frame rotate around the BB with that? It makes a lot more sense from a weight distribution point of view, but I couldn't see a happy way of it not smacking the down tube or chain stays if it's span by accident.

  • No, it can't. I keep meaning to modify it and make a more stable base, but other things always get in the way.

  • Boring stuff always gets left until it's critical ;)

  • And then it gets bodged or ignored anyway in my world...

  • It's the only way.

  • +1 for BB mounting painting stand. Honestly no idea how guys paint with a static frame. Also as a short guy, painting a 60cm+ frame would be impossible if I couldn't move it into a suitable position
