I've got a few weekend expeditions in mind on the fixed and could do with a rack to strap a sleeping bag, coat, and bivvy to. The forks aren't drilled (keirin frame). Does anyone know what's out there for this? Probably something that bolts to the hubs and attaches to the bars. There may be a thread about this in which case I'd be grateful if anyone could point me in the right direction. Or has anyone had a go doing one themselves?

Have a look here : https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/265879/
I just fitted a Blackburn Outpost Front rack, it has an option for it to be mounted on the hub, but you'd have to get p-clips to fix it to the forks.

Thanks for this. I'll see what I can find. Probably P-clips are the solution.

Not very familiar with racks and all that. Can anybody recommend me a nice rear rack and bags? Light if possible but doubt there's such a thing. As cool as a front rack looks, I personally found it really twitchy when something weighty was in front of the bike. Not sure if its a matter of getting used to it or not but I tried a mates bike with one of those specialized pizza rack and did not like it at all.
Would want a bag that I can pop on neatly on the sides of the rack and not on top, can easily be slung on my shoulders/back when off the bike will be a big plus.
Thanks guys! -

I've been happy with my Tubus Vego Evo rear rack. It was pricier that I had planned to spend, but I like that it is light weight, narrow and low profile. This mean the bag sits lower and closer to centre of the bike so it minimises the impact on handling. It's not a heavy duty rack, can take up to 25kg which is plenty for me anyway. For bags I used the Orlieb Back Roller classic, it's no nonsense and has a shower strap which is convenient but I would carry it around fully loaded for long excursions.

sorry if this has been asked before...
got sold a tubus tara front rack that didn't have all the bolts but worked with some spares. nice, but after a while i realised how much i missed a rack. i took the pannier rack off and tried to fit my cetma to the surly straggler. no dice, except with a very dodgy (my trademark) construction. i would like to get a front rack AND pannier system to work with the surly's weird forks. is this my only option?

Anybody using a Restrap barbag? If so how much room is there between the flats of the bars and the bag cradle, enough to still get yer fingers round yer bars?

Just been using mine for the last week touring in the Pyrenees. It sits pretty tight on mine, Don't think you'd be able to get your hands around the tops of the bars. Fine if you just rest your hands on top of the bars though.

Cheers for the info. May look elsewhere in that case.

I haven't tried this one myself but it has got those foam thingies/plates to keep the cradle away from the bars. It's on sale and it looks well made.

Blackburn do the outpost and the Soma porteur will do panniers and a platform. Alternatively, you could have the Tara for the panniers and a separate platform (Specialized Pizza rack, Surly 6/8 pack rack, Nitto M12/M18). I know @spotter has used something like that on his Genesis.
The front rack thread is here by the way. -

Someone made a lil light mount for a rack from bits and pieces recently... can't remember who or how though!
Ended up looking like the problem solvers one... any guidance?

The one I made was out of a piece of steerer with a bit of old inner tube over it to make it grippy. Pop a star nut in and then you can thread the bolt though
Worked very well indeed, can be very light too if you have a bit of carbon steerer to use. If you needed the right angle piece like in your photo you can easily use a small piece of metal, as the nut is threaded you can easily bolt anything on it.
You can use two top caps and some headset spacers too. Pop a bolt though and use some of the spacers from a V brake pad to space it off the eyelet, that works well, but the diameter can be a bit large for some light clamps.
Passport make a few OTP versions though for cheap
Rixen Kaul also makes this which is pretty useful as it has a nice amount of stand off
Also Origin 8 make a knock off Paul Gino for about 1/3rd of the price

Where does one aquire some black bungee netting for on top of baskets? I had some tyres pop out of my basket at an inopportune moment this morning and I don't want it happening again.

After rejecting ILE rack bag as advised above I solved my front rack bag needs with this Vaude Silkroad Plus.
Perfect fit with Pelago medium sized commuter rack, even if velcro attachment straps are quite on the short side. I'm quite happy with this solution, perfect for my needs in commuting/light touring, and I still got the option open for front panniers.
