  • Is there a surefire way to join plastic threads?

Every single fucking post about the topic says something different.

The Y-piece leaked so I swapped it out for a new one and used some white PTFE tape on the big join with mains metal pipe.

Now it's leaking on the smaller plastic-to-plastic join to the coffee machine which has no PTFE tape but was tightened hand-tight then another maybe 1/4 with a wrench (was trying to be careful not to crack anything). The other end is hand-tight, no PTFE, no leak.

Should I just get a plumber to make an all metal splitter? Should I use blue PTFE tape on all the joins? Some people are talking about using potable, PVC-friendly pipe dope. FFS, surely there's some basic fucking science involved there that I can apply this this pipes instead of internet fucking voodoo.

In other news the Maeco dehumidifier I bought works well.

    Death to plumbing

  • Just catching up on all this. Congrats TS. Place looks amazing.

Any news on your sale @greenhell? I was at a mate's place in Lewisham Last weekend and they were saying that the market in SE seems to have stalled a bit.

  • Which coffee machine do you have that's so awesome that it's plumbed in?

  • A big red one.

    Talk to me about pipes.

    sniffs pipe glue

  • In Faversham Heights news, I'm still coming to terms with the vertiginous stomach-churning terror of being the sole earner contributing to a £250k mortgage and the cost of running a 4 story Victorian townhouse. The reality of it should be quite manageable with some careful budgeting to be honest but my track record with careful budgeting is not great.

Am genuinely considering giving up booze for cash reasons. And physical and mental health reasons. And fatness reasons. Yeah I need to stop spending mortgage money on beer. Difficult prospect when the only thing that quiets the nagging terror that I'm going to let my family down and end up shamed and alone is y'know, sweet sweet beer.

  • Home Brew thread....

  • Ha. Yeah I think that's a very very bad idea.

I really need to sober up and grow up. For a bit anyway.

  • Anyone else fancies feeling the fear and moving in opposite me.

  • I'm trying to reconcile £400k four bedish terrace house with the Faversham I knew

  • we've got a second viewing on thursday. it's the lack of a back garden that's causing most people to turn away.

    hey ho, we're patient.

  • What is a "highly popular road"? Actually addressed to fatberg

  • Plumbing woes, obviously it should all work without much bodging but you might have an issue with the pipe from the coffee machine. Occasionally the ends of plastic pipes which press onto an O ring or other plastic fitting get marred or damaged by fitting issues, then when you change the fitting for a new one the old damaged end won't seal. It's usually a bitch to spot because the plastic looks fine with a cursory inspection but a small deformation or mar in the end can cause water under high pressure to leak out.

tl:dr Change the pipe to the coffee machine. You may need to change your new fitting too as the end of the coffee machine pipe might have damaged it.

  • Ta.

    It's a Rancilio S26 btw, a big, red, commercial 1-group machine.

  • That's a LOT of house for the money.

Until you look at the map and find out where Faverishamington is.

  • It's all that funky press-fit shit on the coffee machine side of things. It goes from mains into splitter, with the coffee machine feed going into a water filter system via (some guys name) press fit.

It was 7 years ago. I'll have to google it to find out where to find the fitting. Or might see if I can just replace the O-ring in it if need be. Pain in the arse as I have to keep moving the washing machine to get to it.

  • How is the running cost working out so far?

Our detached victorian energy costs have been very reasonable so far but obviously it's not that cold yet.

  • @ludd One with insufficient parking.

  • @Dramatic_Hammer It's okayish I think. We're in a terrace and the front and rear walls are double skin with a small cavity apparently, although i'm skeptical about that to be honest.

Sash windows can be a tad drafty but they're all new wood-framed double-glazed units and we got have shutters on the lower two floors. Blinds and curtains only on the top-two.

Got a decent new boiler and plenty of insulation in the eaves and attic. Current gas and electric costs are manageable. The one that's killing me is the water which is on a meter currently costing £90 a month. A lot of that is that I went a bit mad watering a new garden and lawn over spring and summer before I realized we were on a meter. Whoops.

  • Aha, that makes sense. My road is unpopular. No cars parked at all, for miles in either direction. Just roadkill, empty plastic bottles

  • £90 a month for water! That's crazy. I think we pay about £20 in london's famous lambeth

  • £90 a month

jesus, what are doing? washing yourself in the stuff?

    posh bastard.

  • @Sparky £6k season ticket innit. I really like the town though and the commute is relatively stress free. It's an hour on the high-speed into St Pancras and a 10 min Brompton trundle into town. Two highspeed trains hour plus two to Cannon St and one each to Victoria and Cannon St. Thus far, (it'll be a year in a couple of weeks) the high speed has been incredibly reliable.

The town is quiet but I think it's a bit of a hidden gem. Loads of independent shops and cafes, great pubs and the market is on three times a week. Independent cinema, museum, arts venue, galleries, farm shops and all kinds of countryfied goodness. Whitstable is 10 mins away, beaches at Broadstairs, Ramsgate, Margate are 20 mins. I dig it.

Downside is lack of decent restaurants in town and that it's a bit UKIPy. Haven't seem much evidence of that though. It's also a bit folky and hippyish which I quite like. I've been getting involved in local volunteer groups with all the right-on grannies. Get me.
