I'm interested in recommendations too. Just tried 26" P65 SKS and found that they sat way too far from the tyres. They're too wide anyway so need to find a different solution.

Buy Bluemels in the right width (depending on your tyre width). How far the fenders sit away from the tyres depends on how you fit the fenders, and the clearance between the tyres and the frame. Like @Batt said, buy (wider) tyres that fit the frame plus mudguards.
