Dont want a fd. I wouldnt want to change during a ride.

The alternative is @Dammit 's method of having two seperate chainrings and changing them over completely, this is just an easier version of that

Fair do's. I use the 110bcd rings from SRAM. 38 off road loaded and 46 for anything on tarmac.
