  • The prequels are a lot more straightforward and would make decent films.

Would also give the opportunity to set up the concepts in advance of the Dune film so the film would be taking place in an established universe and wouldn't have to explain as much background.

  • IMO they nailed the pacing. Considering it was pretty much a 3h film I got so immersed it carried me through no problem.

Bearing in mind it took me 4 attempts to watch Bladerunner, I'd always pop the dvd in late at night and end up falling asleep within the first hour. I thought it was just me but since learned that it was notorious for it's slow pacing.

My God that cinematography though! Every scene was meticulous. The digital billboards, the Wallace headquarters with the light moving through it, the abandoned hotel ...

  • so long as they don't get herbert junior involved. man can't write for toffee.

still not convinced dune even needs another shitty adaptation.

  • I had the feeling that pacing wasn't consistent, (original BR was just all around slow) BR2049 was ok for the firtst hour and half-ish followed by a dead-spot and sped up again till the end. You could go as far as saying that they had to edit bits out to keep the total length bearable for broader audiences.

  • I already can't wait to go see it again.

  • I saw BR2049 last night. It looked absolutely stunning, and at times I was absolutely captivated, but there were also times when I was a bit less clear about what was actually going on, and a bit more aware that it was close to 3hrs long. I managed to get my head around most of it during the walk home. Still not sure about the subplot with the revolutionaries though. I'll leave it there because of the potential for spoilers, but I suppose that's more of a setup for another sequel than a fully developed plot on its own.

The product placement was awful, in a way which worked really well. I don't think it reflected that well on the companies that were very obviously in it (apart from Peugeot, whose future cars look awesome).

  • Also, the trailer for the Death of Stalin is hopefully just a bad reflection of what the film is actually like, because it didn't look great, but considering the cast and writer it definitely should.

  • I quite enjoyed the Atari & PanAm product ads/product placements. Nice nod to the original.

  • I only really watch movies on planes, so was disappointed on my trip to Bishkek to find that Pegasus don't show movies. Instead I have to review the Vin Diesel movie about cars that the guy across the aisle was watching on his iPad: it was very bad.

  • That's not really fair though. If you couldn't hear the dialogue, you can't make a fair judgement.

    Vin is very eloquent.

  • Vin Diesel films are very much dialogue-driven.

  • Vin Diesel is amazing in Iron Giant.

  • Word of advice requested from those early vbiewers of BR2049.
    mespilus jr. is 17.
BladeRunner is one of those films, Alien, Apocalypse Now,
from my youth that he has yet to see.
Could he watch BR2049 first and still have it make sense,
    or,
do I sit him down to watch my Metalbox Director's Cut version of BR before BR2049?

  • I would watch the original first.

I wish I'd watched it again before watching the new one. Might need a lesson on context and how futuristic it must have seemed when it was released given that it still stands up now.

Also a few of the replicant/Blade Runner roles are kind of taken as read in the new film and not spelled out, so the original is good for contextualising the new one too.

  • Finally got around to watching 10 Cloverfield Lane. Was quite tense. Fun little universe being developed.

  • Yep, watch the original first.

We watched it again last night then went to see 2049 this afternoon. I agree with most of the comments above to some extent. I was totally engrossed and it flew by, the Mrs said it dragged a bit, 10 from me, 6.5 from her. Peugeot wins product placement Oscar.

  • My wife didn't mind it, I wasn't that thrilled.
Neither of us particularly enjoyed a recent viewing of the original.

    Many thanks your replies.
I'll sit him down with t'original this week.

  • The Train - 1964 Burt Lancaster.

A superb WW2 action movie directed by
    John Frankenheimer & Arthur Penn.

  • Found 2049 pretty disappointing. Failed to build on or add anything to the original film, for me.

  • Ryan Gosling = I'm out

Such a shit actor, makes Jonny Depp look diverse

  • ^ abso fucking lutely

  • Agree, I also have a serious problem with Zimmer scoring every damn big-budget film these days. He's such a one-trick pony.
