Hopefully this is the right place for these questions....
Any tips pointers in the right direction for food photography? Would be for home initially and non natural light because I'd be combining it with dinner cooking....
Tripods? Any recommendations? Ideally one I can carry shortish distance while riding...

Ahh okay. I attempted a very similar (less successfully) shot when visiting Dubrovnik.
I like it.

Keep it simple: single source of light, fast-ish 50-85mm lens. Tripod if you're not using flash.
I'd recommend off-camera flash if you're doing this in the evening. Play around with bounce surfaces etc but really, as long as the food looks good IRL, you should be fine.
Of course bright morning light through a window is ideal...
On the subject of food photography, this always provides lols: http://dimlylitmealsforone.tumblr.com

I want some collective power from you all! I might be given some freelance jobs to teach some 1 day digital camera course, what can I teach in a day that shouts good quality and value for money? I don't know if that will happen yet but will find out this week and once I know the job's mine (I hope!), things will have to happen very fast... My understanding is production not post production, so probably more like an introduction to digital camera or something... it is only a day so I don't know how in depth should it be etc. I am used to teaching people who have pretty good basics in photography and in my day job, students are here to stay for 3 years, not a day... so I am really not sure what can be done in 1 single day?

Not photography specific, but...
Whenever I do some learning where I’m new to it, I want the basics in an accessible way of learning, with plenty of opportunity to put the learning into practice.
If I find I already know quite a lot of the theory, I appreciate 1) my pre-existing knowledge being validated, and 2) learning a few little hints and tips, or different perspectives on the subject.
Given you don’t seem to know the knowledge levels of your students beforehand, might a mix of these things work as a basis for your planning?
I.e. basics + different ways of looking at the same thing? + maybe have some next steps immediately after the basics in your back pocket if your group seem to have a good level of prior knowledge? -

how about relating your teaching to really common photography - such as using the camera on your mobile. since thats what the majority of people have and primarily use.
I've shown a few people things such as getting horizontal and vertical lines to actually line up, so walls and horizons are not wonky for example. using light that you have to hand to your advantage, or at least to get the most from it.
stuff like that is easy and can show an obvious improvement which is easily understood, it doesn't assume or need technical knowledge and can be transferred to any camera. you could move on from that to more technical things if needed.

I'm guessing the students would have some understanding of the camera they are using. Perhaps you can set them a challenge say 5 photos of a different brief and then do an assessment and things for them to work on afterwards. I guess if its a business venture they will be looking for repeat customers so might be way to point people in the right direction and also offer them the next level of training.
Also happy to be a test subject if you need someone to give the final idea a test on! Always looking to learn

Thanks for those who gave me advice on a digital camera course. Sadly I think the opportunity has gone to someone else. There is always next time I guess...

Take some pics and earn some money? Biggest perk is you get to work with me.
that's a particular favourite of mine, I got the impression the sign was not a joke.
