  • Just checked my brompton and it's in the recall batch, going to give them a ring now and find out what the haps is with the recall and whee I can take it to get it replaced...

  • They'll only tell you to book it in at a dealer for a swap.

  • which is what they did, will book it into brixton cycles or putney cycles, where I got it from, brompton seemed to believe it will be a half an hour job, depending on how many other bikes have been booked in..
    I'm not convinced..

  • So we now sold out of all the bottom bracket, and a back log of Brompton to sort out!

Although Brompton doesn’t says to stop riding your bike straight away, I would advised not to ride it until you replace the bottom bracket having seen a handful snapped.

  • I have had "some" success. They have agreed to refund me the cost of the replacement BB and cranks, but have arranged this with the dealer I bought them from, i.e. Evans in Gatwick. A 1hr30 round trip by car (if traffic allows!).

  • They’re right it’s just an half hour job, but they cannot comment on when it will be replaced base on the queues of others Bromptons to sort out.

Bear in mind that they may not have the replacement B.B. in stocks.

  • I have 2 brommies (well a Brompton and a Merc). One for me and one for the wife. I have a Merc framebag with a welded alu frame and a blank Brompton frame which I attached an old Army Surplus kit bag too. Its surprisingly good, although its missing the rear facing pockets. I'll do the same once the old Merc bag dies (its not the toughest material).

My original intention was just to mount my Super C saddlebag to the frame but its not quite big enough and I use it on other bikes. Brompton made bags are great but they're terribly expensive.

    Apologies for the shite photo.

  • My advice, contact customer service at Evans in regard to this.

  • Thanks Ed, I will try this.

  • You'd think before voluntarily recalling >100k bikes they would have amassed huge stocks of the part required

  • Perhaps, but if they're the only buyer of said BBs (I think they are) then if there was a significant accident/fatality and they were holding out for stock before actioning recall they'd be fuck no?

  • They stopped using the offending component in May

  • Stopped on new builds though no? Still hold stock for the decade or so of bikes that were fitted with them and supplying dealers around the country/world

  • We even have taken Brompton that’s still boxed up into our workshop!

  • Anyone any idea if Brompton dealers (in this case, their own shop) would've been using the offending BB for repairs/spares over the last few years? They don't mention this possibility (but it seems very likely) - IIRC mine was replaced when I got my hinge done..

  • Feel sorry for anyone working in a bike shop that sells/sold bromptons this weekend, expect loads of people with bromptons to come in and start kicking off.

  • We’ll be fine, it’s the severe lack of bottom bracket that’s the main issues.

  • Good shout.

There is a manufacturing date on the outside edge of the bottom bracket cup ironically. My knackered one seems to be from June 2016.

  • Anyone want / need a soft Brompton flight case?

We have one going spare - good condition and it has skate wheels OMG

  • @tallsam in case anyones interested.
Your green handlebar bag is a 1958 pattern webbing back pack for british army issue. Can be had very cheaply as not WWII and the cold war isn't collectable yet.
The poncho or Bum roll can be handy too.
Downsides are weatherproofing as non waterproof so gets heavy when wet :)

  • Really interesting. Thanks. Its a really solid bag. Likely it'll outlive me. I've put a plank of wood at the bottom to stiffen it up and prevent sag. Wasn't aware it was not waterproof might treat it to some weatherproofing (or just tub it with candlewax). If not I'm sure I could adapt said Poncho.

  • Evans have already refunded me the cost of the bottom bracket, and will also refund for the crank once they have it back, which will be via Collect+ for free.

Chuffed, they really couldn't have helped me much more. Apart from coming to pick it up themselves, the lazy sods...

  • This thread is over 7 years old, but a fraction under 50% of the posts are in the last two years and more than 40% of them are in the last year. Was there a sudden explosion in forum Brompton ownership or is that just what happens when TS buys one?

  • When I joined up in the 70s we was issued 37/ 38 patten webbing with ww1 type painted steel cloth wrapped water bottles with a cork stopper. That 58 pat pack looks like a repaired/refurbished one as I don’t remember ever seeing one with different colour straps n side pockets like that

  • Could be a refurb. Side pockets and straps match mine, have seen varying shades in the past, could be a batch production thing. Most of the 37 i used and saw was a sort of sand/tan/beige colour, did see the odd bit in green.
Bromptons need a front rack for a Mk4 Enfield :)
