How are you getting on with that 1x set up? Thinking of doing the same with my commuter but not sure if I need to take the plunge into SRAM 1x specific parts.

It's fine, I really like the barend shifter. It has an MTB chainset with a shonky chainline, so the biggest cog is restricted using mech limit screws (so really 1x8), as it dropped the chain from that position a couple of times even with a n/w chainring. Get a road chainset & you will be fine.
