I had a E39 M5 many years ago and had this issue. I replaced the final stage resistor 'hedgehog' that controls the fans and fixed the issue. Same as you, battery used to drain in hours, 30mins to fix myself.
Mine is taking days to drain rather than hours. I'm quite happy changing the hedgehog, but based on what I've read online, I don't think that's the problem, I think it's just a dying battery.
Ahh sorry, thought you said hours.... Mine was draining overnight, it was very sudden. We had gone from London to Cornwall 1 day, woke up the next day and the battery was flat.
