  • That's a solid approach. I like to think I'm the same.

Why go to a restaurant and tell the chef how to cook your dinner? Express a preference sure... but relinquish to their greater knowledge and experience. It's worth it. Maybe.

  • New page, new photo.
One of my favourite things to have ever left our shop.

  • This is straight up the best way to get the best end product possible.

The analogy I use the most is how it works with tattoos . I am covered in tattoos, ranging from awful to slightly better than awful... but it's only on the last 3 years or so out of the 17 I've been getting tattooed that I've realised the only way to get a truly top notch tattoo that will be seen as such for life most importantly by me, but also by others who are knowledgable in the world of tattooing, is to find an artist who's quality of work and skill is top notch, but most importantly has a unique style that You love. You then need to give that chosen artist a rough direction of what you want doing, and then just put your trust in him/her to come up with the goods.

Top notch finishing skills are very important in this line of work, but in my opinion, a custom painters best asset is their creativity. Anyone can paint a bike well with practice. Coming up with a paint scheme that pushes the boundaries and changes people's opinions of what's possible/considered the norm is what we should be doing.

It's. basically impossible to do anything that hasn't already been done before these days, but that shouldn't stop you trying.

  • And if you are doing something that has been done before, your character is what is going to change it

(this is cheating because it's a vinyl sticker)

  • @privatepatterson, @hoops, I had to tell a client where to stick it a couple of years ago when she directed me what lens to use at what angle. I told her to get a monkey and pay it bananas (literally).

I do the same as hoops with tattoos, I only have a handful but every single one of them I only give the artists some refs (never other tattoos), usaully pictures of things I want them to represent and no more than a couple of lines of what I would like in terms of colours and patterns.

This is how I would like to work with other creatives in other fields. I already feel quite bad by sending Ted a long list of what I would like for my bike, but I guess with a bespoke bike, perhaps more conformations of type of bike / materials / eyelets or not / bottles or not / internal or external cables / clearance / headtube angle / what brake etc etc are needed. I did say to Ted to do whatever he sees fit to make my bike cool. Hopefully, he can see that I am just overly excited...

So conclusion is, I will be having just plain black for my bike, please? £50 plus 6 cans of cider? I will just tell him to send it to you when he is done welding and you can just post the whole bike to me, yeah? (Sorry bad joke...)

  • Sorry for the silly long rant BTW.

  • It's not a wolf. It's a bear.

  • Maybe pay them both in exposure? ;)

  • That's a good idea! I do have a number of followers on Instagram and a lot of friends on FB.

On a serious note, do you find it a little insulting when people ask you to do a job for free because they are famous? Well, so am I! Famous or not really is a matter of opinions and perspective... And don't get me started on the I am poor because I am a student or whatever...

  • Not insulted, I just say no. Unless they have something I want, but that is just bartering....

  • So you are not painting my cat patterns fork for free? I mean it's just a fork! And I am famous! LOL...

  • Leaving today, #sickcandeyfadez with bare 953 stainless detailing.

  • The quality of work here is incredible.

One of my favourite projects (and my first paint), this mtb refurb for my gf, using Full Dip cans. I'm still disproportionately pleased it hasn't fallen off yet.

Would like to do more paintwork when project shed becomes a reality, because doing this outside was incredibly frustrating.

Anyway, back to the professional shit

  • OMG what a thread.
I have been dying to get one of my bikes resprayed, I'm inspired to do it now, or more likely inspired to let someone else do it for me, as I'm pretty sure any pathetic attempt by me will not match what I had in my head!!

Some truly amazing spray jobs, kudos to all those involved

  • That blue paint - is it the bastard blue metallic paint?

  • Yes. And guess what, it was a bastard again!

Also, you should have seen the problems we had with @Ecobeard s bike and that bastard blue.

  • I'm sorry I inflicted that on you : /

  • That poor spray booth wall

Will look great getting chipped up on P-R next year though, so cheers matey

  • @privatepatterson. You know you did a couple of white background and doddling / drawing bikes. Does it have to be white background and black drawing only? Can it be black or dark colour backgrond and some sort of glowing colours or something like that?

  • Absolutely.
    You can use different combinations.
We'd likely steer you away from any kind of 'glowing' products though.
They tend not to be very lightfast and the effects won't last forever.

  • Just finished @Dammit s bike. He refused candy fades (the arse). Painting bikes in one colour is a real ball ache, especially when it's only available in 2k to match Neil's favourite classic porsche.
