Yeah fair enough. I know a few places from previous jobs that might squeeze it in.

W123 series mercs, what's better as an every day driver. The 4 pot 230 or the inline 6 280?
-
• #37110
I did not realise he is pretty much the forefather of the modern compact.
-
• #37111
I tent to think he's designs are timeless and certainly influential.

6x6 range? Quality

Quality
I suspect not

I had a go with this, and in theory my 1598cc 16v with 280 cams needs ~38cm.
I recon with my man maths and not being near the car to physically measure I got to ~36cm as a guesstimate

The two values (one half of the other) confuse me- which do you use for what purpose?
-
• #37118
Most important is lack of rust, and evidence of proper maintenance.
Then I'd always go for a straight 6 over a 4 just because they are nice and smooth. Neither are what you would call fast.
But the 4 is probably a tough old beast, and almost certainly drinks less.
The 6 is less likely to come with nasty plastic seats. -

Yeah the two values it spits out are confusing - I couldn’t work out why it gives you one value and then a second one which is half. I might try and decider the original formula

Might be to do with resonant frequencies, where one has the first harmonic of the other.

Cool, thanks. Looking at a '82 280 over weekend in that browny gold colour. Although think it's the M-B Tex fake leather interior. No cracked dash though.
Would like to compare to a 230 but for some reason they are more expensive down here. There's also a nice 280te nearby. They want $10000 for a 411,000 kilometer car though.

I'd expect it to be on its 4th water pump by now :-D

Apologies for the dense question, but what's the advantage of the airbox over simple intakes in the engine bay - do you get any static pressure recovery from a ram intake?
-
• #37124
I'd imagine that you get some ram effect, although how much with a NACA duct I'd question, but most of all you get atmospheric temperature air - which is going to be 30-40 degrees cooler than engine bay air.

I had a E39 M5 many years ago and had this issue. I replaced the final stage resistor 'hedgehog' that controls the fans and fixed the issue. Same as you, battery used to drain in hours, 30mins to fix myself.
I can ask him, but I suspect the answer would be 'no'. He's a busy chap. Also, given the shape you'd need to make a multi-part split mould from the pattern. I'm sure there are carbon laminators out there who'd be able to do it though.
