Do they "clunk" into place when you put air in? If not add another layer of rim tape. Though I can't think of a good reason not to use sealant. I built one of my Isen wheels last week and mounted the tyre first time, then added sealant and it has remained at pressure since then.
It's a GOne on the hookless lightbicycle rim

No. Never had a problem flying with tubeless road tyres.

I've never had a tyre hold pressure for more than half an hour without sealant. Even if it pops onto the rim, it'll still leak pressure until the sealant forms a layer on the tyre bead.

I've got tires holding pressure with no sealant overnight. Some combinations just work

I've had UST tyres on UST rims hold pressure for months without sealant. I think there might be a clue in there somewhere :)

The tyres are hooking into the bead when inflated, but the air leaks out around the valve stem (no sealant), then looking at the tyres just now the bead has come out again.
Does this mean it was never in properly?

My tyre is still up from whenever I fitted it in this thread. No sealant yet.
2-3 weeks ago.

Leaking around the valve stem usually means your tubeless tape isn't sealing the spoke holes. Maybe your tape is too narrow, or just not sticking good enough..
@mdcc_tester Are those UST tyres any good? What tyres are you using?

Success. Soapy water and smashing the hell out of a track pump and my GKs clunked into place. Glugged some Stans in and not a leak to be heard.
However, I'm struggling to get more than 40psi in them as the valve (I think it's a Stans one) hisses like fuck, no sealant coming out but it won't seem to take more than that. I only want to get it to around 50-55

Currently using Vredestein T-Lope UST 60-559, they're good for what I use them for (which matches what Vredestein said they would be good for). Also discontinued, which is why I only paid a tenner each. I think the last people to get them paid about £6!

Didn't know UST excited this long, thought it was a new thing Mavic introduced for their new (road) tubeless wheels. My bad.

Didn't know UST excited
It excited me in 2004, which was 5 years after Mavic launched the first UST products.

Inflate and as soon as it starts hissing tighten it, you can always tighten a bit more when all the pressure is pushing it. If this doesn't work go with the sealant or if it's leaking a lot you may have done a too big cut in the tape, replace and be careful with the valve hole.
Also going for a little ride used to work for me with leaky tires, somehow helps the sealant to go in the right places. -

not all tubeless tyre pop into place. IRC dont but they instead lock almost silently compared to some other into the rim.
regardless of the brand of tyre a proper tubeless set up should hold air without sealant for a while maybe no days but for a while and the tyre should remain firmly locked in place such that you can ride on a flat or near tyre and it wont come unseated.

I did it! Well, I did one wheel, then it was past my bedtime and I had to stop.
Ended up deciding to use my Vittoria Hyper Voyagers (35mm) instead of the Compass tyres as they seemed a better bet, so my first successful attempt is also ghetto tubeless!
Nothing revolutionary in my technique: two layers of Stan's after cleaning up the rims, seated the tyre as well as I could dry (including frantic pumping to try to get the beads as near to the rim as possible), poured in some Joe's sealant (just what my LBS had given me), a quick shake then more frantic pumping and shaking followed by the telltale ping...
Quickly settled at about 50psi (having gone up to 60) and it still seems to be at that this morning.

Schwalbe Pro One didn't pop into place but it has been holding good air for three weeks with no sealant. I have a bottle of your caffe stuff to put in I just haven't been riding so haven't got around to it.

I'll have a pair for sale soon

this is my experience too, none of the Schwalbe I fit actually popped. They just lock the bead.

Did the back tyre today, even easier than the front. Went to fit it to the bike, axle was clearly too small. I'd got the wrong thru axle conversion kit for my Hope hub. Turns out the axle is actually 150mm X 12mm. You can't convert that, so it's new hub time. Which means taking the tyre and Stan's tape straight off again. FFS!
In my limited experience, tyres have sealed without goop.
How long do they stay inflated?
