Ways not to lock your bike

Saw a very expensive and fancy looking e-bike locked up with a licorice lock in Abergavenny over the weekend; couldn't believe it!

I was at one of London's Lidos last night and there was at least 3 bikes incompetently locked.

Took photos of one as an example...

And the owner will just leave them there, blocking other people from locking their bikes.

This is a sort of 'how not to leave your bike' - I was locking my bike up yesterday and noticed that the bike next to mine still had a smartphone in a handlebar mount. I hung around a bit to see if the owner would return then just put a carrier bag over the handlebar sort of as if it had been blown there. I didn't want to take it with me nor leave it in full view. Any other ideas for this sort of situation?

Might have been best to take it then leave a note with your contact details?

replace the phone with a polaroid photo of the phone tied to a helium balloon in the upper atmosphere. Write a riddle on how to retrieve it on the back.

If i was going to be nearby I would take it and leave a note.
Covering it with some local debris was a good idea though.

I'd try and work out how to contact the phone owner, perhaps by calling their emergency contact if that is set.

A couple of years ago I was able to reunite a Blackberry with its owner that way although I'd found that on a pavement rather than attached to a phone so a bit different.

I was thinking maybe I should have taken it and left a note, but I was going to be fairly unavailable the rest of the day and today so didnt really want to take it on. When I came back to get my bike 20 mins later, the other bike was gone, so hopefully the bag did the trick.

This chap must have been delighted that his cunning 2 lock tactic stopped his front wheel from being robbed too...

What on earth do you have to be thinking to do that?

It boggles my mind that you would carry two locks and attach both of them to the same component, let alone a QR wheel.

They must have come back and been all like "Damn that was one fine thief. Probably a plot idea for Ocean's 14. A true mastermind."

Gotta say a big thanks to west india quay people who didn't nick off with my bike when i left my keys in the lock for 2 hours whilst watching a film. First time and fingers crossed last time i ever do that.

The only other explanation I can think of it was an accidental/intentional bitchlocking (of the wheel) and the bike owner added lock to the bitchlocked wheel to avoid that being nicked and took the rest of the bike away for safety.
