Ended up deciding to use my Vittoria Hyper Voyagers (35mm) instead of the Compass tyres as they seemed a better bet, so my first successful attempt is also ghetto tubeless!
Nothing revolutionary in my technique: two layers of Stan's after cleaning up the rims, seated the tyre as well as I could dry (including frantic pumping to try to get the beads as near to the rim as possible), poured in some Joe's sealant (just what my LBS had given me), a quick shake then more frantic pumping and shaking followed by the telltale ping...
Quickly settled at about 50psi (having gone up to 60) and it still seems to be at that this morning.
