  • Pedal reflectors only compulsory on post-1985 bikes (Great Scott!)

  • In depth analysis of the Uber row:
    https://www.londonreconnections.com/2017/understanding-uber-not-app/
A very long read that everyone who signed the petition in response to Uber's email should study.

    Some highlights:

In total, Uber had failed to report six sexual assaults, two public order offences and one assault to the police.

A very different story to that put out by the Uber chief exec on the news this today.

There is more on how they avoid taxes and screw their drivers. Also on the impact London traffic:

. . why have TfL said ‘no’ when practically everyone else has said ‘yes’?
To a large extent, the extreme public backlash this news received and the size of Uber’s petition provide the answer – because Uber are a bully. Unfortunately for them, TfL are an even bigger one.

    &

Indeed if TfL have any kind of ulterior motive for their actions, it is simply that they dislike the impact Uber are having on congestion within the capital, and the effect this congestion then has on the bus network.

Having been out of London for a year or so I notice how many more drivers are wandering all over the road while studying their mobile app.

  • Theregister has much juicy stuff on Uber.

Uber also failed to explain the use of Greyball in London, software that could be used to block regulatory bodies from gaining full access to the app and prevent officials from undertaking regulatory or law enforcement duties.

    Yeah but no.

Bit of a non-sequitur. How does the size of the petition show they're a bully?

When Field Day was on there was a mass of Toyota Priuses filled with white, middle-class young things jamming up the vicinity of Viccy Park. Could have easily got the tube, but this will be the future.

  • Good news, those of us who are motorcyclists are worth even less than pedestrians ;-)

    BBC
A biker who killed another motorcyclist while riding "too fast and too close" has been given a suspended jail term.
Barbar Gull, 32, was with six bikers when he crashed into Ahmed Bafadhel's machine at up to 73mph on a 60mph road.
Gull, of Barleyfields, Wooburn Green, Buckinghamshire, who denied causing death by dangerous driving, was jailed for 36 weeks suspended for two years.

It's interesting how the popular perception of different groups seems to lead to a certain "value" on their life in the eyes of the law !?

  • Was at Velo Birmingham yesterday - start was delayed because of saboteurs. Wonder if there'll be any letters about these people who keep trying to disrupt bike events?

  • Loved this comment:
Doesn't this show what a bag of washing Birmingham residents are, media would have you believe oh yes Brummies accept everyone into the community , like hell. If it had been a parade of 4x4 I'm sure they wouldn't have thrown that stuff . These people moaning about not being able to get out , I bet they were only going to the shop . Sad Sad people

  • To be fair, it looks moorish like a mosque than Westminster Cathedral of 2014 ukip fame.

  • Hard to have any sympathy for people when they had 3 months notice to plan things. As if they couldn't deal with the road being closed for a single day of the year.

But most people were really nice, standing out waving, clapping, giving us sweets, drinks etc.

  • Exactly, 50 miles might be a major inconvenience but that woman made it sound like a journey to the end of the earth. Always thought of it as such an insular place, England's 2nd biggest city that no one ever wants to visit.

  • He'd have been better off in Mr McGregor's pot. Doubtless I'll be dragged to see it by mini c00ps. Oh joy...

  • Coolest place in England according to this American

  • When there's a bike ride on, obvs :)

  • The fact he refers to it as a town to sounds like he's still a bit lost but he liked the suburbs. No doubt the place was a bit cooler with him in it too.

  • About time. Tax avoidance via biscuit purchase should be addressed.

  • Not a case I'm aware of: Killer of cyclist Vicky Myres in Gt Manchester pleads guilty to death by dangerous and warned he'll face jail sentence of "some length".
Not much background I could find. Unusual for someone to cough instead of hoping a jury will let them off - perhaps evidence was overwhelming.
    Court copy:

    HIT-AND-RUN DRIVER ADMITS KILLING CYCLIST
A man has been warned he faces a lengthy jail sentence after he admitted killing a cyclist in a hit-and-run incident.
Gurparthab Ajay Singh, 26, pleaded guilty at Minshull Street Crown Court in Manchester on Tuesday to causing the death by dangerous driving of Vicky Myres, 24.
He also admitted failing to stop after a road collision and failing to report a road collision.
Miss Myres had been cycling with her boyfriend's mother in Timperley, Trafford, shortly before 7.55am on Sunday August 27, when she was struck by a VW Polo driven by Singh.
Judge John Potter warned Singh, of Hall Lane, Wythenshawe, he faced a custodial sentence "of some length".
He said: "You pleaded guilty to an act of almost indescribable selfishness which has caused significant harm for the rest of their lives to many, many people."
The case was adjourned for sentencing on October 26 to allow the Crown Prosecution Service to provide further information to the court.
Singh, who wore glasses and a navy blue jumper, was remanded in custody.
Two female relatives of Singh were in court for the hearing, as well as six members of Miss Myres' family.
In a tribute after her death, Miss Myres was described by her family as a "lovely daughter" who had "everything to live for".
The florist, from Flixton, Manchester, had just bought a house with her partner James and recently cycled from Land's End to John o'Groats, her family said.

  • Watch "of some length" still somehow end up as "six weeks, suspended for two years."

  • Good job for him that Birmingham is no longer a "no go zone" and that they're letting non-Muslims in again.

Clearly not a big Fox News fan.
