  • As @Well_is_it said. 13 all the way. Even an iPhone is more powerful than your 2011. Pretend it’s for your partner, get the discount.

  • Tbf, an iPhone is faster than a current MBP...

  • 13" + extra RAM. @chrisbmx116 How would you go about using a partner's education discount? Should I buy as present for her and then transfer the "ownership" (via apple id) at a later date? Would that be just a simple change? :)

  • I don't think they are that bothered by the technicalities of the ownership/discount, you can pretty much walk in to a store with a random student and get a discount if they show their student card from what I have heard. And yep, extra ram, I was using a machine with only 8GB for a while and I did max out the usage and had to shut apps down to keep working.

  • I'm here for AI doom machines tbh.

  • This is how you do release notes:

  • Re cloud storage, thanks for the suggestions guys. I'd completely forgotten we have office 365 fomr work that I could make good use of the 1TB storage... hummm...

  • Any USB-C hub recommendations (ideally with Ethernet,SD and/or MicroSD). 1 hour browning Amazon is like watching the clone army marching -_- Ideally it shouldn't mess with the wireless...

BTW got 2x 8GB Kingston 1333MHz DDR3 RAM Memory spare, with less than 6 months of use. Great improvement over the stock RAM for 2011 MBPs...

  • So I went too trigger happy this morning and deleted some files from Trash, not to the Trash but from the Trash. Any data recovery app to use? A tech at work suggested Testdisk. Any other suggestion?

  • I've got an old 27" iMac (2011 with DVD slot) that has the dreaded 'grey screen' ie: it won't start up. I've tried all the various fixes but can't get past this. I'm guessing it could be a graphics card or possibly the hard drive.
Its been getting quite slow, even though there's nothing on it - most of my files are on Dropbox.
I was thinking of taking to a local Mac reseller to diagnose what's wrong with it and if they have to take it apart to replace a faulty part, I wondered if it's worth asking them to swap the drive for an SSD setup instead.
Any thoughts would be gratefully received.

  • I have a 2013 15" Powerbook Pro and would like to link it to a 27" screen - does anyone have any recommendations for a good screen and not as expensive as the Apple version?

  • ^^ yes, ssd is worth every penny

^ anything Dell with good reviews, check wirecutter. I have a ViewSonic VP2772 which is great, but potentially above your budget. Cheaper than Apples offerings though.

  • SSD is a great idea! However if the failure is from graphic card or main board it will be expensive to solve. Check that first before investing on a SSD

  • High Sierra this eve... just grabbed a Sonnet Breakaway box for my eGPU to celebrate.

  • As someone with a 3rd party SSD in the laptop and an external boot SSD on my work iMac, I'm going to politely sit this one out until it's 100% clear that this won't fuck all the things.

Just a PSA, APFS WONT be installed on fusion drives.

  • HA, yeah thats prob wise, I might try and run the update on my Hack too just for fun, will defo break it.

  • You clearly like to live on the edge. In reality, I'll probably get curious and install it anyway later on. Everything's backed-up so no prob if it all goes to hell.

  • I don't know the answer, but I do know that you should stop using that drive as soon as you are aware. Then an image of the disk should be made, after booting from another disk, or on another machine. Recovery work can the ln be done on the image.

  • Hey thanks. Sorry forgot to update. Crisis over, managed to piece together most of the stuff needed from email attachments etc. Proabbly much quicker than faffing about with data recovery. But yes, good point with ceasing the use of the drive to provent data from being overwritten.

  • impatiently downloading High Sierra now...

  • Everything seems to Just Work®

  • Fucksake!

I have a photo on my mac. Need to send it in a text. Messages decides to not work even though I'm tethering via my phone.

Well guess I just add it to photos in it synchs automatically apple style? Fuck it does. After loads of attempts of dragging it both here and there but nothing happening I google it. "open itunes, select iphone, select all or a few photos to synch"

I mean COME ON. It's 2017 and the day of the firewire iPod is long gone. Sort it out Apple.

  • Don't come here with your clever solutions!

I grumpily emailed it to myself instead
