There is no bike that can be left unlocked in London.

I only need to lock it because it's too heavy to take up stairs ;)

Eventually it will be stolen, that is true. But the point of a beater is that if it's nicked it's not a massive drama. I would still throw a D lock on my beater but I wouldn't really give a shit if it was nicked compared to any of my other bikes.
