The weight penalty is very, very little. The only reason to go smaller is aero i guess, that's the real deal of new, bigger rims, more aero with bigger tires
It's 100g additional in my build, which is around 10% more weight, a consideration for race/climbing wheels.
Are you hillclimbing or longer distance road riding with flat and/or descents?
