  • Technivorm people - how many grams per brew? And presumably it need filter papers - a particular kind? Can you get a metal or otherwise reusable filter? Just trying to work out the cost/effort ratio.

Currently I'm brewing 1 to 2 litres a day in a french press (at roughly 50-60 grams per litre, depending on type of coffee).

Some of that is wasted after it steeps/goes cold if I get distracted (hence the Technivorm appealing as it can keep it to temp for longer).

Is it a hassle to clean etc.

  • My favourite piece of kit the Technivorm. 60g per litre works perfectly. I tend to use 1l of water rather than the full 1.25 it can hold as then the extra 15g of coffee in the filter can cause it to overflow if you grind a touch too fine.

Use Melita size 4 papers from the supermarket, I think there is a Swissgold reuseable filter but I’ve always had better results with paper in any brewer.

Hassle factor is minimal. My favourite thing is putting the machine on first thing, going for a shower, then coming down to a litre of coffee with no dicking about. Very little human error factor as long as you weigh the coffee and are reasonably accurate with water level. I rarely mess with the grind setting for it unless I’m making a half batch which it does very well too. It tastes excellent and stays hot for hours, flavour drops off past about 2 hours but it’s still very drinkable. Cleaning just put the cone in the dishwasher and fill the carafe with puly caff and hot water.
