1989 Basso Ascot build classic frame modernish parts

Posted on

  • Settled on DA7800 28h hubs laced to Kinlin XR19 silver rims, Sapim Race on the rear and Sapim Laser on the front, handbuilt by Harry Rowland. Haven't ridden them yet but they are beautifully quiet and light.

Have fitted a pair of 25mm Michelin Pro 4s. I wanted gum walled, or maybe white walled tyres but it meant spending more money for no gain in weight or durability. Maybe next time, if anyone has any
suggestions (I did trawl the tyres thread)

Was warned about DA 7800 hubs having compatibility issues but it turns out all shimano ultegra and DA 10spd cassettes fit. Have fitted a nice light DA 7900 cassette, was the best quality for the budget I had. Came in a bundle with a Decent KMC chain.

In the post is a nearly new 78oo crankset.

To be finished with mix of 105 and Ulegra parts off my other Basso.
coming next summer next summer are DA 7800 derailleures and brakes.

Cockpit and finishing kit are straight off the other bike for comfort and budget.
The fizik saddle is nice but would rather it was all black.
Pedals will be, shock horror, spuds. Which all means I can jump on the bike and ride it in my same shoes. I also need comfy bars in a particular position due to long running hand problems.

This is another area I could do with advice on: are there any decent quality silver bars that have a shoulder to create a flat transition from bar to lever hood?

  • Oohh, nice frame! Following.

    Bars: soma hwy1?

  • Love the Ascot. Shaping up to be a nice build.

  • Cheers , will look into the soma bars when I add some bits next year.

  • I like your Gap, on the hhsrb thread. Got any others?

  • ouf! one of my dream frames, lovely tubing & paintscheme!

  • Almost finished.

Lovely smooth ride. A little stiffer than the Basso Astra, less springy, nippier up hills and in acceleration and no brake rub on rear wheel due I think to the triangular LH chain stay. DA cassette definitely shifts better under load than 105, cranks feel more efficient too. Having always built bikes on a budget I'm noticing the high end (if old) parts.

    Still need:

A longer seatpost. This one is 180mm, I need at least 190. 25.0 posts are either rare and expensive, or modern, cheap and heavy. I can't justify spending 100 quid on a new old stock campy one at the moment. Any help with this much appreciated.

A new stem; this one has an expander bolt which fails to loosen, and so has to be painstakingly twisted out of the fork for every build. Don't want it siezing.

Available to view in real life on the brixton cycles club run tomorrow morning :)

  • If you're looking for 25,0mm seat post maybe this will interest you:

I'm not a seller or anything, but it's cheap and I could facilitate. ;)

  • Ooh, want! Thanks for posting. looks long enough too. Need to know specifically the length between clamp and min. insertion line. I need at least 175mm of extension.

  • Ive asked. He states in description that total length is 22 cm. Clamp to insertion line is 14cm so I'm afraid it's not going to be enough.

  • Ah well. I just realised that the saddle on my tourer gives me another 15mm of height, so I can switch them for a temporary solution, though fitting the skinny fizik saddle to a 15kg touring bike will look a bit odd.
