• Narrow feet? Italian shoes and giro. Wide feet? Northwave, sidi mega, lake.

No point buying shoes that don't have carbon sole.

  • Noted, ta. I'm never really sure what shape my feet are. I used to think I had a good idea, but years of thinking too much about proper leather shoes has lead me to conclude that you can't generalise. No one last is gonna fit you perfectly, unless you get lucky or have one made.

A lot of people will say shop around and try on as many pairs as you can but often you end up sat there surrounded by boxes wiggling your toes and feeling unsure, with assistant stood by and not really getting involved. There's no substitute for wearing them for six months unfortunately.

  • I got Sidis because I had years as a kid of seeing my dad in his Sidi motorbike boots and begging for some but my parents refused because I was still growing and they were so expensive. Also they're rad

  • A few shops still have staff who understand foot shape etc. Also decent insoles make a big difference.

There was a guy at Sigma who was really good helping my wife get shoes that fitted - she can be quite sensitive to poor fitting shoes. Not sure if he is still there.

  • Bont; if you like the look of them can be moulded to your feet shape at home in an oven.
