Whereas Owlz scored three tyre wrecking flint gashes in as many miles on the section north of Bognor, on 33mm tubeless.
If people want to try this on CX rubber it comes down to the question: How lucky are you feeling?
-
• #505
Indeed. My abortive effort included something like 17 punctures (running tubed Grifos - 33s I think, for reference). No doubt some were user error in a rush to get back on the trail and perhaps not inflating enough.
Thoroughly enjoyable day nonetheless.

Can I come?
Just seeing this thread pop up again makes me want to jump on a bike and get back out there.
Don't worry about fitness, if you start struggling you're always very near civilisation and rarely far from a station to take you home.

I'm up for this and free next thursday or sunday ?? will be on the SS 29er

If you're aiming for Brighton I'd head on further past Truleigh Hill YHA and then about half the way over the next section to Devils Dyke. You can then drop down a nice bridleway past Perching Barn and into Hove rather than the road curise you currently have through Shoreham. Also, head along the seafront for more feeling of acomplishment at the end.

Other than that, good luck! Still a big day in the saddle.

ha ha. Those are massively heavy though, certainly going to compromise climbing speeds. The also cheap but not quite as heavy Schwalbe CX Comps might be worth a try. I used them for the Three Peaks yesterday and they withstood that beating though it's a different kind of puncture-threat on the South Downs Way.

Don't do it on a cx bike
I don't own a MTB. Would 44cm flared bars and 2.1 inch knobbly 650bs on a cx bike be fine?
-
• #512
Yep. Defo in the summer.
I’ve not done it in the depths of winter though.

Good excuse to build some 650bs, thanks

Did this over 2 days this weekend, pretty epic ride. The wind gave us a helping hand for most of it. It's a tough ride but arriving in Eastbourne early Sunday evening was a great feeling.
There were six of us, all the guys on CX bikes punctured at least once, so yeah I think MTB and tubeless is the way to go really, if you have the choice. Also means you get to enjoy the descents.

Those gusts on Saturday were pretty epic. Fair play for venturing on to the hills.

Sunday was a gorgeous day for riding.

When are we doing this then
-
• #518
I might be interested pending on whether I can get my bike/body ready in time

When I’ve got an e bike

When the mud / clay dries out. I did 60 miles of it last october and averaged about 6mph. Carried half the bloody downs back to petersfield.

If you've done it once, you can do it again!
Unless you didn't learn your lesson.

• #522
I’m up for it.

• #523

I feel like someone said they did it puncture free on a set of these? http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/schwalbe-land-cruiser-road-tyre-k-guard/rp-prod143800
