I guess everyone picks on the smaller clubs (if you consider Stoke to be smaller than Liverpool).

Not true. Everyone was aware of the potential hypocrisy of the club pushing for VVD. Amyn weren't happy with it either. Southampton were rightly unhappy, told us to back off and we did. There was no bid. How is that the same?
Now as to why there wasn't another replacement identified is being worked on by Hawkins.
