  • Took the opportunity of a spare weekend to explore Devon coast to coast, this awesome route:
    https://ridewithgps.com/routes/25242930

Basically two long sections of ex-railway path at either end with a bastard hilly middle section. Camped near Okehampton which at least split the hills over two days.

Seriously top notch views, and barely any cars even on the road bits. Managed to stay dry too, although lots of wet feet from where the roads/paths where occasionally flooded. Pompino coped ably despite me packing too much stuff. Aeropress and hot meals from my camping stove was worth it though.

  • Also I have beef with RideWithGPS, my ride data shows nearly 1000 ft more climbing than that route above, and I felt it!

  • yeah Lemonade. Sweet country. well done

  • I marshalled a group of punters on a 25 mile ride from Bournemouth to Bestival last weekend, it was quality even despite the fact the Lulworth range roads were closed and we couldnt do Whiteways into festi. 100 people plus marshals. easy day riding and a fun night with a free ticket for bestival. Unfortunately got robbed in night and fucked it off friday morning as a corporate wankfest so rode home in the rain which was much better than being there with the chumps. This weekend have been mostly riding my 1951 Holdsworth fix re-condition which has been lovely.

  • Woah, that's a lot for an overnight. Hate to see how you pack for a week!

Nice one though. I wanted to camp out here but the mosquitoes are vicious.

    @_Leon balls about getting robbed. 6/10 ?

  • nice, what's the road conditions like? is it mostly cycle path gravel, or paved, any doubletrack or singletrack or more roads?

  • Yeah I need to invest in some smaller kit really. Sleeping bag, inflatable matt and stove pretty much took up that big pannier. Green thing is the tent. Handlebar bag had snacks and camera. Other pannier for clothes, food, tools... Open to suggestions!

  • Not bad actually, mostly paved, some gravel, and then lots of roads in between. Lots of it (eg the excellent section after Tavistock) was in a much better condition than the guide I saw said, so it must have been fixed up recently.

There were some crap sections where paths had flooded, in the bit on the way towards Okehampton. But not much like this.

  • great, thanks for the info!

  • Had extra hour kip on Sunday so meant missing the club run, fannied about for ages finally got at out at 10:00 for a lovely solo 3 hr ride. Might be the start of missing club ride sundays.

  • Originally planned for Saturday, but due to the weather report I decided to start my weekend on Friday and do my first ride above the 100km since years.
Great ride, great weather and I discovered some of my favourite roads in South Australia. For the most part I did avoid heavy traffic as well. Also glad I didn't do it the following day, max wind speed was like 65kph.

Today I managed to get out on the Wolverine and do an hour and climbed Mt Osmond, then took some single track back down, which was great fun.

  • Pic of that trail looks (running-route) familiar - near the Packsaddle / Tokers Green?
Was pretty lovely out, got up early and did my 40-mile round trip. Was on the commuter bike (racks, bags, lights, etc.) making sure everything as bolted down properly (and for a bit of weight-training! Heavy as.)
Got called out by some roadies asking if I was prep'ing for the TCR. Nah. Not me :-) Too lazy, too much work (in the way), too slow...

  • Did a route from south London down to Pagham in West Sussex, couple of climbs in surrey hills then pretty flat into Petworth (good stop off for a coffee) and then over Duncton and Sussex downs, then a nice descent past goodwood all the way to the coast!

  • Yes, that area. Just past the pond.

  • Nearly a ‘spotted’!

  • Am on an orange ss Kona 29er. I'll do a skid next time

  • Usually the battered Battaglin. Will likewise.

  • @Cycliste and I dragged a couple of friends from our local cycling club over to Italy to do the Tre Valli Varinese gran fondo. @Cycliste also did the Crono (TT) on the Saturday, but managed to do something spectacularly bad to her rear derailleur. She only got going again after the crowd pounded on the door of a nearby bike shop, got the proprietor to open up the shop and fix her bike, which involved removing and dismantling the rear derailleur. Needless to say, the 8 minute delay meant her time wasn't at the pointy end of the field.

Sunday was the Gran Fondo. 130km, or thereabouts, 2000m of climbing, and thousands of very excited Italians swerving around in a marvellous display of enthusiasm exceeding bike handling skills. Happily we all survived with only one minor incident when Mrs Friend fell off her bike climbing up an 18% ramp. Here's my ride:

I beat Mr. Friend (who was in a different age category group) by nearly a whole two minutes. Mwahahahaha. My official time was 4h30m56s - I stopped off for a quick wee towards the top of the second climb. @Cycliste and Mrs Friend finished after they'd started dismantling the finishing arch, so they'd taken away the timing equipment. Still, a good day was had by all.
