The moment we got on the boat the guy suddenly pulled a gun and started shooting at birds. If I stop posting you know what happened 🤞
It was pretty sketchy :)

Crazy! There happened to be a bicycle festival in Cappadocia right this week. I'm entering the 107 km 'Gran Fondo' this Sunday. Should be fun!

Not many updates lately. I've more or less made it from Ankara to Tatvan now, crossing Cappadocia, Kayseri, Kahramanmaras, Gaziantep, Sanliurfa,
& Diyabakir. So pretty close to the Syrian border. Everything was good didn't feel unsafe, just strange to realise there's a war going on 200 kms from my location while I'm cruising around enjoying my holidays. While I was on my way climbing up to Tatvan and the Van lake I managed to hang onto the back of a truck lorry thing to make some free uphill kilometers. The very nice driver picked me up, by bicycle is in the back and we're on our way to Van! More pictures and words later -

so damn cool, good to hear that you're still enjoying the journey :)

It's very good, just a bit lonely in this country. In the whole span of Turkey I only met two other touring cyclists, both going the other direction sadly. Hopefully Iran will be better as it seems to be a more common destination for cycletourists :) on the other hand everybody here seems to be engaged in permanent conversation with everybody which is fun and a positive change from Northern European city life

Do you reckon it has to do with the climate of 'uncertainty' for tourists in turkey more generally? Good to hear that they're all engaged in conversation though.

For sure, the 'Western view' of Turkey is completely out of touch with reality though. It's way more developed than I thought, moreover I've never felt unsafe in this country, maybe except for some adrenaline cycling at night. What irritates me is that people are completely obsessed with nationality and are constantly fed bullshit from news and media

3 guys travelling by bike seperately surfed my couch in the last 4 weeks down here and pretty much this:
people are completely obsessed with nationality and are constantly fed bullshit from news and media
keep it up! looking forward to reports of iran. really keen on going there.

Just to be clear, my 'uncertainty' comment did not refer to the level of development or the attitude of the people towards visitors. I wanted to avoid a political discussion, hence the pm :)

Don't worry, politics are interesting to me and welcome in this thread. Leaving the country today so just wait a little bit 😊

Sooo I've made it to Iran! It's pretty nice here, probably the closest a Westerner can get to visiting an alien civilization. My usual arrogant stupidity got me to hop over the border with maybe only €100 in cash without realizing you can't just draw money out of the wall in this country. I'll have to do some Iranian money transferring magic at the bank. Sigh...

A little badly written short on my entrance to Iran on the usual cycletello.wordpress.com

Sounds amazing! Great you've been given a warm welcome. Take care.
Has something happened to make you surprised at this?
