Found these wheels locally for £30 inc cassette and a pair of Lugano tyres.
Old Mavic CXPs laced to Sora hubs. They were in need of a little truing but the brake tracks are like new. Can't imagine they've done much milage at all. Also gave the cassette a bath and it's come up nice and shiny. Had the Corsas waiting to go on another bike but nice tyres are must imo.
Remembered I also had some Exustar pedals attached to my Pre Cursa that's been stored up the loft - I'll be listing this for sale soon in the classifieds to make room for this new one.
Most expensive thing of the build so far are the set of tyres!

I like a good budget build. Frame looks nice too.

Headset and BB arrived. It's starting to look like an real life actual biek.
In keeping with the #testerapproved Tektro brakes and Exustar pedals I've ordered a black Kalloy stem, handlebars and seatpost from various sellers at around £10-15ea. Will take some time for them all to arrive so that should give me a bit of time work on restoring the paintwork. Or ruining it as it may be.
Have a black saddle from my loft and now some £3 Lifeline black bar tape ready to go but is horrible, a first mis-step. Should have checked for recommended options.

Think it's now working...

Getting there, always wanted an Argos too. Not sure if this is useful regarding the paint.

Yep, inspired. I think he must live quite nearby in Cheshire as I recognise a few of his outside shots. Have already ordered the Humbrol!

Still no pics for me in post #4

I would treat the inside with a rust proofer. Dinitrol do a good anti rust product or you could buy a product called frame saver.
Rusting from the inside has a killed many a good frame. Especially as the lighter steels are crazy thin

They are indeed! Looking promising

Even if you don't see rust inside some sort protection is good practise. It might have had only dry weather use only.

So with the hill climb season now over for me attention can return to something a bit weightier...
It ain't no show pony but does ride nice even if it is twice the weight of my HC bike. Surprisingly spritely ride, springs up hills in time with standing on the pedals and the steering is quick even with a 10cm stem. Really enjoying it so far.
Had a puncture first time test riding 5 mins from home with the Corsa G+'s so swapped for some old Pavés - think the greenwalls actually go quite nicely with this frame.
The Sora 9sp front derailleur has a bit of rub at either extreme with the 105 chainset - Shimano doesn't list them as being compatible so not sure if much can be done other than adjusting as best as I can and living with it. BB flexes under pressure but it's more than that. Really impressed with R3000 in all other respects and can live with 9sp 12-25 up in the Peak District even with the extra weight.
Still to Kurust and touch up the paintwork but it has had an internal coat of frame protect so should be good for a while.
Full size frame pump next?

Weirdly I saw that video last week and wondered if he was South Cheshire or North Staffs because of the accent. Nice bike also!
Really pleased to have won this Argos Racing Cycles frame & fork on eBay earlier this week. I used to live in Bristol and I've wanted an Argos ever since I left. Haven't had the opportunity previously but finally managed to get one:
It's made of Columbus Gara, which I don't believe is particularly high end and so I think a budget friendly build is in order. I already have a set of 105 5800 cranks going spare along with some black Tektro calipers so I'm thinking of completing the build with modern budget groupset in black rather than matching the silver logos and risking period components sourced from eBay. Currently thinking 9sp Sora R3000 would be a good idea. Hopefully the 'ferrari' red and black should make for a nice combination but could this be a mistake?
According to the seller it's a 'NOS' but has been stored in a damp barn for some years and the paint therefore is quite tatty up close. If true, it looks like it's quite had a rough old life, no dings or obvious signs of use but plenty of paint chips and rust spots. I've given it a clean for the photos but is it worth using T-Cut or other similar paint renovator/cutter and touching it up with enamel paint?
I've never renovated a frame before, and haven't had a steel bike since from around when this would have been built in the mid 90s. I'd be quite happy to live with it as it is but if it's fixable or advisable to treat the rust then it's probably going to be worth me doing.
The frame is 73º parallel and the forks look to me to have quite a bit of rake but measure about 53mm which I think works out as less trail than any of my other bikes. I'm quite interested to see how it will handle, hopefully Argos knew what they where doing when they built it. Looking forward to getting this built up and ridden!
