It's got a headshock that doesn't seem to want to pump up and Matt's got a working fork/headshock that could be switched in.
Or I could just get a more modern 2nd hand mtb which might be a better idea if this gets too complicated.

Schrader valve has gone or the air spring seal is shot. Both are easy fixes with the right tools.
Actually easier than switching the fork out.

I was under the impression that nothing was easy when it came to headshocks so that's interesting. Are these tools you have?
