It wasn't obvious on the live coverage how it happened - Kirby and Kelly thought Contador had been dropped rather than escaped.
If he'd been closer to Froome on GC he wouldn't have got away and I suspect Froome could have caught him if he had really wanted to but that would have been undiplomatic. He and Poels showed what they had left at the end.
