Swinley a lot of fun and easy to get to. Loads of waymarked trails and also some old, pre trail centre trails, that I rode for the first time on Sunday. All very good and easy to find.

Not SE, but back when I was in London, I did my first mtb riding around Leith Hill, Guildford area. Well worth the train ride.

Well worth the train ride.
You can ride out there. Mostly - 90% - off road. It takes about three hours though.
Makes you a baddass

If anyone's thinking of voting in the Singletrack readers' awards, please can you consider voting for Keeper of the Peak in the online service category? Probably a wee bit out of the way for a lot of you, but his work in the Peak National Park is having a great impact, helping avoid unnecessary trail erosion, and educating people on where might be good to ride. Chris (the guy behind it) is also heavily involved in trail advocacy, working hard with local authorities and other user groups to open up new areas for riding.

Hey all,
Anyone here done London to Brighton off road specifically the heart foundation route? I need to go to Brighton in a few weeks so was going to use it as an excuse to tick it off. I wont be doing it on the day of the main ride so was wondering if i needed to be aware of anything they specifically open for the main thing? Also vital question are the trails any good?
cheers!

Finally made it up to the Peaks, and after failing to buy the apparently excellent Dark Peak mtb book and dithering about routes, settled on the ol' classic Kinder circuit. The sun shined more than the clouds rained, and apart from the hordes of walkers up Mam Tor and the odd DofE party it was pretty quiet.
Particularly enjoyed the descent to Roych Clough and the first and second portions of Jacob's Ladder (obvs). Sunken road descent from the top of Chapel Gate down to the road was a pretty brutal introduction to the genre. Every moment of steep, flat out rubble was butt-clenchingly terrifying. Kate, travelling at more reserved speeds, had less trouble with that (and in general only dismounted for the nastier step-downs, which was pretty impressive given her relative lack of experience. BPW and @Doctor_Cake helped a lot there).
Found myself massively struggling for traction on a lot (most) of the climbs; Kate less so, clearing bits that I couldn't, but she couldn't keep up the efforts required not to dismount also - problems clearly not shared by the guy on a 29er Camber with legs of chiselled marble who steamed past us at one point.
All in all, a very satisfying day out, and I'm glad to have experienced one of the most famous routes in the UK, but in the future I'll be seeking out more singletrack and less rubble, if there is such stuff hidden away up here.

I have a pair of 26" Maxxis Larsen TT 2.35 in reasonable condition that are a fraction too big for my frame.
Anyone got something similar in 2.0 / 2.1 they want to swap?
ha! hardly. just an extension of my fascination with finding the most unrideable footpaths inside the m25
