  • Had an epic fail few days ago... Decided to spare my nice vintage Campag track wheelset from the nastyness of daily London commuting and installed a beater wheelset instead, including a Somos double fixed track hub, which felt a little dodgy but I thought (wrongly) was ok...
All went well during Sunday test rice and Monday morning commute so I felt safe when riding home in the evening, until the lockring threads turned into alloy paste, the cog unscrewed itself, too late for me in the drops to reach the front brake in time... The rear of a bus was fast approaching so I jumped onto the pavement to avoid it, lost control and had to use my face to brake... Complete idiot me! Luckily, only cosmetic damage to me (the face!) and the bike (bar tape), I managed to put the cog back and cycle back home, slightly in shock.
Working with slowly fading away symptoms of minor head injury the next day over ten hours in front of a computer screen, and even more hours yesterday wasn't nice!

Sorry for the long story... I'm thinking of building another set of wheels and wondered (sorry of this has been mentioned over the last 25 pages, it probably has) whether the velosolo converted Shimano disk hub was Tester approved...
    Ta!

  • Best intro to a tester approved question ever.

  • Context is important!

I understand that Novatec track hubs are approved already and maybe I should not look further...

  • Make sure you draw the collision in the appropriate thread.

  • wondered whether the velosolo converted Shimano disk hub was Tester approved...

In theory, yes, the HB-M525 used with a 6-bolt sprocket is #tester_approved. I haven't actually used one, but XT in general gets my seal of approval, as does using sturdy front disc hubs as rear fixed hubs. I have an M758 on the tandem, but the 525 is a simpler conversion and the 10mm axle is sufficient for a solo.

  • I understand that Novatec track hubs are approved already and maybe I should not look further...

As long as the 16T lower limit isn't an issue, the M525 or other 6-bolt option is a better choice than any threaded hub.

  • too late for me in the drops to reach the front brake in time

Two brakes and proper drop bar levers are #tester_approved, a single cross top on your fixie skidder isn't. Saved my skin tonight when a taxi driver thought my hi-vis bar tape, dayglo wheel decals and flashing front light amounted a cloak of invisibility and entered a roundabout across my path.

    Thanks!

16T limit isn't an issue, I'll go for that probably if I find a front hub that aesthetically matches it, kind of... (With a similar perforated high flange, maybe the front Novatec actually...)

  • Why?

Because transmitting torque through a threaded coupling makes grown engineers cry.

  • if I find a front hub that aesthetically matches it

Use an unconverted M525 on the front :)

  • Two brakes and proper drop bar levers are #tester_approved, a single cross top on your fixie skidder isn't.

Have to agree with the proper drop bar lever comment here, would have allowed me to save it probably...

  • Use an unconverted M525 on the front :)

I'd hope to avoid unused disk mount on the hub though... I have this situation on the tandem's rear hub and it annoys me a little...

  • Haha grown engineers might have to avoid this forum

  • Get better soon!

    Thanks!

Drawing that collision needs to be done...

  • Tester approved scales?

  • http://myweigh.com/product/7001dx/ for bike stuff, postage and cookery. If you're dealing in drugs, cartridge reloading or snide tom, you might want one of their smaller models with higher resolution.

  • SKS Rennkompressor - which is the Tester Approved chuck choice?

  • Tester Approved chuck

Hirame Yoko, but I've heard good things about the KCNC and it's cheaper. If you don't need something compact to fit a disc wheel, the stock SKS EVA chuck is fine.

  • To be more specific, my LBS has both the EVA and Multivalve models at the same price (and the more primitive Hebelstecker too). Is there any practical difference?

  • I swapped out the stock EVA head for the multi-valve head, as it kept slipping off prestas in general and even from new would rarely seal properly on my gf's valve extenders. The MV seems a much better fit.

  • I have the MV on my Aircon 6.0 and it works fine within the limits of that pump's pressure range, so consider that #tester_approved as well as #TomvanHalen_tried_and_tested. The old fashioned one that came on my Rennkompressor was shit (not that I cared, as I only used it while waiting for the Yoko to arrive), definitely avoid anything that looks like this:

  • Thanks for "precisioning" your previous answer. I didn't ever consider getting the Hebelstecker, you can see why my previous "primitive" was justified. I can only imagine that they keep making it for the sake of the retrogrouches (of whom there are many, but they dare not show their faces here, obviously!).
