I just got full Ultegra 6800 with mid cage reaer and 11-32T for AUD750 from CRC, which is a fucking steal!

I once found a guide somewhere on here for adjusting the 6800 FD that actually let the FD work like intended. It was a good guide because it involved drinking beer whilst installing. (this is how I rate my install guides)
I have been searching all morning but can't find it anywhere. Anyone remember which one it was?

Pretty sure I have that bookmarked, but you'll have to wait until this evening when I'm home.
You can make a start now by putting a sixer in to chill.

My 2013 Red ones are really strong, better than my 2017 105 ones.

Taking bike to shop would result in less money for beer.
Last resort only then. -

I handle a 1 out, 1 in policy in the fridge, so that is item 1 already solved. :)
Also feeling like something better from the basement for later, suns out so will have a quick ride after work. Westvleteren is good for these kind of occasions.

Well I do have it bookmarked, but the page has been moved: http://www.moonigan.co.uk/index.php/2015/05/15/how-to-setup-a-shimano-ultegra-6800-front-derailleur/
Maybe there's some internet magic that can recover it for you?

As I understand it, that new fangled Rival 1 stuff uses a road chainline (43.7mm). What I don't know is what the effects of using one and/or a mtb crankset would be, for smaller gears and bigger tyre clearance.
Anyone got the knowledge?
-
• #5966
MTB cranks in single ring setup will use a chainline of around 49mm
-
• #5967
Wider for boost or fat bikes.
-
• #5968
I know, but what I says asking was whether that would play havoc with the rival gears, given that they're designed for a road chainline, or is it not that important on 1x configurations?

your dad bike research is going strong

It'll be cross-chaining a lot in the larger cogs which you really don't want because that's where your chain is already under the greatest stress
-
• #5971
That's what I figured, but can't see how it's tangibly different to an mtb 1x setup. Both 11sp, both 135 o.l.d. Anyway, I guess it's no bother if it doesn't interfere with wide stays / tyres / guards which I can probably figure out with a quick CAD mockup.

We've moved to ordering

Generally road chainstays are a good bit shorter than MTB chainstays which exacerbates the problem.
Considering 1x on an MTB already has problems in the largest sprockets (i.e. can't back pedal without the chain dropping off), I'd stick to the proper cranks.

Right, Rival 1 aint happeing on that frame, here's another quiz: does anyone know if a Dyna-Sys FD will play with sram 10s shifters (Apex)?
edit: scrap that, pretty sure I'm going to go 1x10

Fuck me the new Shimano stuff is expensive - £900 for levers and callipers.
So 105 groupsets are getting pricier eh? #brexit or some other reason?
