• Is it necessary to attend a course before attempting a self-build? ie are they gonna be able to show me some tricks and tips to stop the wheels falling apart, or is good old common sense and Youtube ok?

  • No. I read the Sheldon Brown website, and this book and then got stuck in. It's not rocket science. Having decent tools (spoke key, truing stand, tensiometer) helps though.

  • I'd say so. I built my first few wheels this way. This is pre-Youtube though so it was Gerd Schraner book only.

    I worked in bike shops for a few years so I've done a 'course' it wasn't great though. Just some practice really and going over what I'd picked up.

    Its almost all about practice

  • Read Sheldon Brown's primer or watch a video. Read Jobst Brandt's book if you really want to understand it...
