Bungee cords - 2 or 3 should suffice.

are there 11 speed cassettes that would fit a shimano 8/9/10 freehub that don't have the biggest cog around 40t. I'd prefer something 11 - 32 ish.
I'm guessing something like the SRAM PG-1130 11-speed cassette will be too wide unless it's the 11-42 version, is that correct or will it fit?

There is a new Shimano 11-34 r8000 11 speed cassette that fits 10speed cassettes.

thanks, that's what I was serching for but was hoping for the lower cost ones to work. chain reaction page says it only works with other shimano chains/ mech - is that scaremongering or is there some reason sram wouldn't work.
I've not bought anything yet so I could buy whatever combo (lower budget) but I've never had gears before and all the compatibility is driving me nuts.
I'm only going for the 11 as it's newer and less likely to become obsolete and at the low end not too much more spendy, keeping the chain on with the type 2 shadow + thing seems like a good thing so that rules out less than 10. Should I just forget about that and get a 10 set up? I just want to go faster down hill than my 32/17 single.

I would stick with 10 speed, fitting an 11 speed cassette is not a trivial task on a 10 speed wheel.

dont put it in the bag, but use the straps and the flap of the bag to secure it inbetween the flap and bag. make the straps long and wrap the twice around the tubes, preferably with one through the bb, or bb/chainstay/chainstay bridge hole to make sure it doesn't slide side to side.

Yes, I think 11 is overkill for me. Thanks for the help.
Are the benefits of the 10speed clutch mech something worth going for over going even lower to the 8/9 speed stuff? It seems like a technology that actually makes some difference but I have no experience other than reading just online info.
All I really care about is not bothering people riding behind me on the roads as my 32/17 single is too slow but I think getting a 16 or smaller cog would become too difficult for me to get up hills. Having the chain less likely to pop off seems a good thing.

Clutch ftw.

One last thing that should have been my first question, my frame is Alfine specific and doesn't have a hanger. I am going to buy one of those chain tug / derailleur hanger things. Is that going to make the whole drivetrain run badly and is it likely to fail and end up dangerous?
-
• #85936
That's good to know. I'll go for the 10 speed stuff. Thanks

Could you use carbon powder and epoxy resin to make, say, chess pieces (or any small fairly intricate stuff)?
I'm guessing it would be useless strength wise -
• #85940
You could but it would be poor quality, like you predict, due to inconsistencies in pigment particle size. You would need to mill it/grind it to smash up the particles then you'd probably get black lung or some other miners' disease :)
I worked in raw material and pigment studies for ICI millions of years ago. -
• #85941
Why not just buy black epoxy resin?
-
• #85942
Why needlessly simplify things when faffing, bodging and inelegant solutions to trivial problems are so much more fun?

The small amount you need to add to make it black isn't going to have much effect on the strength. Save yourself time and trouble by using https://www.brownells.co.uk/ACRAGLAS-DYES, as the Constable says, running your own powder mill to try to make something suitably finely divided will be messy, dangerous, and probably ineffective.

Is there any reason nowadays to put up a satellite dish?
Someone has asked about putting one up, and it seemed like a really odd thing to do nowadays.
-
• #85946
To get European channels not available by other means.
-
• #85947
For satellite broadband or tv in rural areas without ground based broadband.

Whole host of them around me for receiving Turkish TV.
Or basically anywhere that doesn't have fibre and wants extra Sky channels which is still a lot of places.

The bridge mount of my front rack has snapped I've found this https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/carriers-racks/axiom-rack-standard-bridge-mount/ online which looks identical to mine but they seem to be sold out everywhere.
Does anyone have an idea where I could get something similar?
Any tips for securely carrying a bike frame with a messenger bag? Only has to go a few miles but would rather not have to get a bus.
