Just out of curiosity and the fact I'm building up a bike for some adventuring, I've just done some testing with a thermocouple and wasted (invested) some time while watching rubbish on tv. Whilst not scientifically controlled and my meter only reads whole degrees, not 10ths. Hopefully 20 minutes for each test to allow temperatures to settle out, with the thermocouple resting in the same position ontop of my ankles, it should be fair in real world usage.
Room temp 21°C
109g SOl Survival bag 28°C
217g Gelert survival bag (basic orange plastic bag) 25°C
843g Military Goretex bivvy bag 27°C
1240g North Face hollow fiber sleeping bag with 2deg comfort rating 29°C
Goretex bivvy bag with SOL bag ontop 30°CObviously the thin plastic of the SOL bag will have very poor durability but performance per gram is quite good.

Interesting stuff. Be good to know how each option responds to 11degc and a constant strong breeze!

Great running track people.
First track session in a hell of a long time tonight, good to get back on it. Trying to rebuild cross country speed after my ultra exploits.

D'oh! It turns out there was an old guy ahead of me on Sunday... 40 seconds ahead of me so I didn't notice. So I'll settle for 3rd in the rankings. :) Been a bit CNBA the last couple of days but I suppose I should click in to marathon training now for Beachy Head.

Sounds like some good running upthread, well done all round.
Down in Cornwall this week so have some lovely if difficult to run coast path on the doorstep. Stupidly bought my road shoes down when trail shoes would be much more suitable so slipped and slid as much as I ran the other day. Loved it. Running as it should be.

Another weekend another race. I'm heading north for the Brendan Foster memorial race, this year featuring the Mo Farah victory parade. Unsurprisingly, I haven't managed to hit pb shape in the week since last weekend so I'm not really sure how to approach Sunday; wait and feel how the legs are on Sunday morning is probably the best approach.
Have a good weekend of racing and running.

Turn it into the Juanito victory parade yeah?! Enjoy!

For those getting into/considering Ultra distance it'd be worth tuning into Charlie Sharpe - Run Riot Coaching page on fb. He's doing a series of 10 posts over 10 days giving some good info about training & racing prep.

alright, I know you guys are pros but wanted some 'beginner' advice. I had a pretty bad cycle injury a couple years ago, broke leg in 2 places, dislocated foot from leg completely....
Running has been the hardest to get back into (partly cause I packed on some extra kg). Wondering what the best beginner advice is? Couch to 5k? Need something that has a bit more stretching/strength advice too...
Would like to get to doing 5k's again...but for some reason it's been the hardest to get back into cardiovascularly/leg strength wise...

Couch to 5k?
As good a starting point as any. Maybe see if there's local c25k group you can join in for support etc?

WHSmiths had this in stock the other day. Might be of use?

Get some half decent trainers if you don't have any. Going into a shop like runners need where they can put you on a treadmill and help figure out a good pair for you may help you avoid another injury.
That and just remember to enjoy it. I think too many people try and do too much too soon and it kills the fun and then ultimately they stop running.

It's a 1ok plan but I know a few beginner runners who have used this plan to great success.

If you are based in london I would suggest getting involved with Chasing Lights.
their backpacker sessions are great because they are for literally anyone of any speed and incredibly supportive so you have a group that will help push you but also wait for you if you fall behind. runs are every thursday
the main chasing lights sessions are all about technique, movement and strength/conditioning for runners so if you are looking to build a strong foundation they will also be a massive help once you get back into the swing of things.

I'd just echo recommendations to get involved in a running group if possible, and just build up slowly at an easy pace for a few weeks.
@juanito - Good luck for tomorrow. Brendan's probably got you down as a "fun-runner" at the moment, so go out and show him what's what. Stick to Mo and see what happens, he's probably tired at the end of the season anyway.
Training is looking a little more marathon-like. 17.6 miles this morning, longest run for months, and included a group session of 10 miles @ 5:59/m, dodging small children and dogs around Ladywell Fields. Hard work but manageable, a nice confidence booster as I need to get used to some hard tempo efforts over the next few weeks. Seven weeks to Beachy Head.

Phil, I may yet end up grabbing a Beachy Head entry. Come out of the ultra feeling like bizarrely fast and don't want to waste the mileage I've got already.
Also I've not yet run a time there I'm happy with.

Thanks for the info about running clubs. Does anyone know if there are any night-time running events or clubs? I usually don't get out of the house until well after both kids are down to bed, around 9:30pm or so at the earliest.
I tend to run until about 11:30pm, and by then I've either ran nearly home, or I am close to a bus stop or train line to home. Any running clubs I've seen tend to start around 7pm, which is useless to me.

I suspect running clubs that might be quite light in number. I seem to recall a group called Midnight Runners though? Someone else might have more ideas.
So the GNR. MO definitely wasn't tired; I was. I was hopeful of something around 76 after last weeks 10,000 time. Almost immediately after crossing the start line and well before the Tyne Bridge I realised that wasn't going to happen. My legs felt dead. The whole race was a battle with a particularly bleak period between miles 10 and 12. I need to think about my preparation and rest more the day before a race as well as probably tapering slightly more.
Time to focus on some autumn 10ks and the cross country season now.

You had him worried though:
"That was really, really tough," Farah told the BBC. "With four miles to go I was hanging on - but I managed to believe in myself and know that at the end I can sprint."
First day back after week off for me, double soaking wet run commute day, delaying the inevitable right now!

I felt bad for not riding yesterday morning, so took myself out for a rare solo run, deciding to push myself (not wise after a few weeks off exercise beyond relaxed sea swimming) but was pleasantly surprised when I managed 4k at 4:43/km. Sore today, I've never run sub 5/km really at all before.
First km felt amazing, 2nd I realised I'd never manage 5k, 3rd I got a stitch across my whole chest and stopped for 5 secs, and 4th was just willing myself not to walk. -

They still meet around 8pm or so for their regular sessions, which wouldn't be any good for me. The midnight thing seems to be a monthly / special event they do.
What time do people here go out running in the evenings? Does anyone else have young children?
-

@youramericanlover You guys should form a late night dad running club!

I squeeze my runs in mostly at lunch times (shower at work helps with this) and recently have started thinking more about running part of my commute. Did get a rare weekend run in on Sunday morning though.

Yeah I was thinking of that!
a "ten at ten" night run. 10km starting at 10pm. Suitable for people with kids, who finish work a bit later, etc.
Well done on a solid race, 2nd ranking is awesome.
She'd beat the train at RTT for sure!
Also, Chorlton Runners did similar format to Ladywell up here on Sat gone, and 5km i think. All promo passed me by though but I'll be looking at it for next year.
