Just saw this photo in Velocio's Seven build CP thread.
Would I be crazy to drill a hole in the bottom of the drops on my carbon bars to allow the bar end juction box then route along the outside as shown on the right?
-
• #2554
Yes - that's the most fucking stupid thing I've seen in my entire life and completely contradicts the idea of internal routing. Internal routing should be exactly that, not just the last few mm of electric cable.
Why won't a manufacturer just make a nice set of alloy bars that has PROPER internal routing?!!?

Already have the bars, so was hoping not to have to get new ones.
With the Pro Stem, how does the cable route from the stem and into frame>
-

The new R8000 CS-HG800 11-34 is dished and fits on a 10-speed freehub.
-
• #2557
Thats the stupidest bit IMO, the cable still enters the frame normally, its just the junction box gets hidden LOL.
So if your Di2 cable entry isnt close to your rear brake cable literally no point doing it.

Guess it will be interesting to see where on the Isen the di2 entry will be relative to the brakes.
I guess there is a marginal benefit (in terms of tidiness from the bar end junction box with external cabling (like the illustration) compared having the JB under the stem

I see! my bad. Wonder why though..

Could you help me?
Just wish to check on the parts I still need to order for my Di2 groupset and you seem good at reading the Shimano flow charts which make my head meltdown
Currently I have bought or have on order
DA 9170 shifters and brake callipers
Power2max rotor 3d cranks
SM-RT800 disc rotors
R8050 front mech
R8050 rear mech (medium cage)
CS HG800 11-34 cassette
6700 Ultegra Di2 Front Derailleur Band adapterI wish to use 3t Aeronova bars with the bar end port
On my still to buy list are
EW-WU111 di2 ant bluetooth unit
BT-DN110-1 battery
EW-RS910 bar end port
grommets
cablesDoes this seem correct?
Which cables should i be buying to configure all these items? cable length through bike to be confirmed by @coldharbour, but guidance on which sorts of cables (Y etc) would be greatI already have the charger from R785 groupset.
I think I will have to mount the battery inside a thomson seat post with packing foam and sticky tape.

You seem to have everything figured out for the most part, but you do need another SM-JC41 to connect everything up at your bottom bracket.
Concerning wiring you could go for a Y-cable for your handlebars, using the EW-JC130-SM(or the -MM if you go for some wide bars). The 450mm goes into the left shifter, 50mm into the right shifter and 350mm into your EW-RS910.
From there on you'll need a (long)cable from the EW-RS910 to (around) your bottom bracket into the SM-JC41. Depending on framesize a 1200mm would be nice.
And then a cable from your R8050 to the SM-JC41, I guess something like 700mm to be safe.
Of course another cable from SM-JC41 to EW-WU111. And one from EW-WU111 to BT-DN110-1. Both around 400mm.
To sum it up:
1x EW-JC130-SM
1x EW-SD50 1200mm
1x SM-JC41
1x EW-SD50 700mm
2x EW-SD50 400mmHope it helps :)

Can any Di2 group use Y Cables now? Could I fit out my 6870 groups with them?
Fewer wires make me happy.
-
• #2563
yes and yes.
they are basically 3 wires with a SM-JC41 junction glued into them.
-
• #2564
Thanks man.
I've built up two bikes with 6870 in a week and I have truly come to love eTap.
-
• #2565
They always could, it's just Shimano didn't sell them. Easy enough to make them on a DIY basis with a steady hand, some heat-shrink, and a soldering iron.
-
• #2566
hahaha internal wiring di2 is a bitch indeed.. especially with steel frames since your magnet tool won't work. too bad etap doesn't have real MTB or gravel parts yet.
-
• #2567
SRAM only made it wireless so it was easier to send back. ;)
-
• #2568
Nowhere near as frustrating are cabling in my cross bike. 4 cables, all fully outered, all internal.
I like Di2, it's fun, but it's no eTap

Thank you so much for your help and insight
1x EW-JC130-SM
What length ought i go for for 44cm 3t aeronova bars?
Also am assuming the 700mm cable is to the rear mech, what length ought i get to go from the junction box to the front mech?
Cheers

James,
I have fitted the Y to these bars and due to the long reach on them I don't think you can get an ideal fit with even the longest of the Y cables
You end up with a tight fit from shifter to shifter and a Chunk of excess on the shorter side as it goes through the drop. The trouble is that the plastic on the Y join is quite bulky so you will end up with that being noticeable through your bar tape.
(Not the end of the world, I am
living with it quite comfortably)
I'm pretty sure those 9170 shifters will have 3 ew ports each, just use one as a master, get the right length ew for Junction to Master and then again for master to secondary shifter using second port. Much tidier! -

Isn't they Y junction meant to be inside the bars? Don't all the cables go inside them? Also is the reach on the aeronovas that long? On weight weenies people were saying it's about 94mm which should be fine for me. previous bars were 80mm but with previous generation di2/hydro and new shifters have 1cm less reach.
-
• #2572
Pretty sure the reach on aeronova is 110mm or 130mm? The junction point definitely isn't far enough along to be inside the bar, instead you can nestle it in the bar opening. Also it takes some time to wire up the bar. I used a cable outer with a kink at the tip to force my way around all the corners pulling string with it, then taped the ewires to string and pull back through.
Along with fitting your brake cable outers it's a good 2-4hrs work depending on your luck, worth it in the end.
Finally, the bars do bend, if you tape your cable down too tight trying to put the Y plastic as far into the bar as you can, it will probably disconnect from the shifter (in my experience) -
• #2573
They claim 110 reach but weight weenies members say it is more like 94mm.
The STIs appear to have 2 ports each. So can I run a cable from one STI to the other, then connect one STI to the bar endjunction box. From the junction box run a cable to the wireless unit and then from the wireless unit a long cable to the junction box inside the frame? Forgive me but I am noob to Di2 installations.
-
• #2574
Mmm maybe, but then maybe they say the same kind of thing about he ergo being shorter than listed? I definitely found aeronova a lot longer than ergonova for what it's worth.
Sounds good to me mate, it's what I did, only I used the one to one junction instead of wireless unit and hid it away inside my frame. -
• #2575
On this page they mention the reach is more like 90mm, just that 3t measured the reach for these bars from the back of the flat section to the front edge of the bar rather than centre of tube to centre of tube.

looks perfect, that RD-R8050 (R for road) does limit you to a 11-34 cassette maximum. And that cassette won't fit on your hub.
Not adding wireless does mean you'll need a Windows PC.
