  • I never actually checked what AvE stood for, now I know.

The TL;DR was that mainly the cheaper ones suffer from brown out, where the accuracy reduces with battery life. I have a cheap one that came with a case. I just only put the battery in when I'm using it and it seems to have remained consistent.

  • Interesting. Is there any reason to bother with the ~£20 ones over the £10 ones? Or is everything in between same shit different brand? I don't use them often, I'll leave the battery out of it. Actually is the Maplin one any good? I could get that today.

  • I don't know. Mine is a £10 one I got off ebay. I'm not a machinist so not concerned with hyper accuracy. +/- 0.1mm is more than enough for me and mine seem to have got me here without ordering the wrong seat post or handlebars yet.

Go for the Maplins ones if that is convenient. You can then even stab one of them in the eye* when it goes wrong

    *return it
