One (non-biking) week in South Vietnam - advice?

Posted on
  • Husband and I have a week in Vietnam in August. We are flying in and out of Ho Chi Minh city. His priority is to chill and not spend half the time travelling. I am fine with that but don't want to leave feeling all I saw was a beach resort that could have been almost anywhere.

These are the options we are trying to decide between - has anyone visited any and can help us decide?

(We are mid forties with zero interest in beach parties or clubbing)

Option 1 - Bus/taxi/speedboat to Can Tho, 2 days in that area then fly to Phu Quoc for 5 days. Spend 5 days scootering lazily around Phu Quoc then fly home.

Option 2 - Train to 7 days in Ham Tien/Mui Ne, mostly scootering around with day /overnight trips to Dalat and Calon Son Mao

Option 3 - Fly to Nha Trang, 7 days in Nha Trang with the same trips as option 2

Option 4 - Fly to Dha Nang, 7 days in Hoi An with trips to beach resorts and the hills

  • In HCM, get on the back of a moped during rush hour. It is the only thing I remember doing there.

If you go to Hoi An and you have a favourite piece of clothing you would like to have another of, they can make copies for you. The town itself is quite touristy in the finest Luang Prabang tradition.

  • Hey thank you :)

We decided to skip HCM and fly direct to Dha Nang instead - just going to chill in the Hoi An area. I'm considering having all my work dresses remade 2 sizes larger :(

  • Get any tailoring done early in the trip. Try it all on and check the stitching.

Quality is generally good but there are some shops that rely on people traveling through quickly and moving on before they notice shoddy work.

Inland from Hoi An has some amazing scenery. We stayed here on a cycling trip and it was a great experience...

You could get up there with a driver very easily.

Danang itself doesn't have a lot going on but Hoi An is very charming and hasn't become a completely generic back packer town.

Take plenty of coffee back to the UK - incredible stuff.

  • Glad you decided to head north rather than south, much more interesting.

Have a blast and eat all of the food!

  • We are there right now :)

    Coffee oh yeah!

We are staying in An Bang and driving into Hoi An. Hoi An is a beautiful town but we are happy to be staying somewhere quieter. Husband is in charge of the scooter. I have been driving 30+ years and he only passed his UK test last year, but it turns out learning to drive in Tottenham is pretty good practice for the quieter parts of Vietnam!
