  • Just purchased something with disc brakes and have absolutely no idea what I am doing...

At the moment I just want to get the brake off the bike so I can shift the frame (that I have bought for the group). XTR M988 lever/M985 caliper, internally routed.

I figure I need to drain all the mineral oil from the system so I can disconnect the hose at one end to bring back through the frame? Any help/pointer to good tutorial appreciated. Thx

  • You'll have a hollow bolt at the lever end that's crushing the olive and at the caliper you'll have a crimped-on banjo.

The hollow bolt won't fit through your internal routing, so you'll need to cut the hose to get it off, about 0.5 inch from the end should clear the barb without losing too much hose. If you keep the hose vaguely vertical when pulling it out through the frame (forks up) you shouldn't lose much fluid and should be able to just fit a fresh barb and olive and top-up the fluid via the lever.

Don't cut off the Banjo end, I've never seen Shimano Banjos sold separately, only already fitted onto hose.
