The continuing Nokia bought Withings so they are on the wellness trail.

Nokia models that are essentially refined 3310s are still popular in places with unreliable infrastructure. Ain't broke. Casio still sells loads of F-91W black plastic digital watches, nowadays it's £9 at Argos (who will still try to sell you an extended warranty for it) or £7.90 from Amazon.
Nokia's "phone that does calls, SMS, holds contacts and plays Snake" was a successful formula. They just didn't take advantage of the expertise they got via Symbian when mobile phones became small tablet PCs.
I hear Nokia's new flagship phone is quite good, and runs Android.

The long game for Merck is for health insurance to keep funding their products. Millions of people being priced out of healthcare by killing or crippling ACA isn't going to move more product.
-

I'm not sure ACA has a huge impact either way. If the US centralise purchasing in the way the NHS does to drive better deals then the world will totally have to re imagine how it is proven that drugs are both safe and effective.

I'm not sure ACA has a huge impact either way.
People who can't afford insurance (especially those with pre-existing conditions) will cut corners on preventative care and "maintenance" meds. Treating an acute condition costs a lot in terms of bed occupancy and staff, but the profits available on the actual medication will be less than for preventative.
If the US centralise purchasing
That's gonna take a massive shift. The time to do that in the US would have been 50-60 years ago, when even the Republican party had a lot more social conscience than today's Democrats.

Public figures always get a lot of hate. This doesn't make it right. And I'm not on the cesspit that is Twitter cos WTF is wrong with people, so much nastiness.
But abstract public hate VS a group of people that's on your doorstep with torches and weapons and ready to get violent isn't quite the same.
And those people also want to change laws as a bonus, so even the non violent ones can have a bit of a far reach.
If Trump ended up with a group of protestors on the lawn of the Whitehorse, knowing full well some of these are literally ready to get violent against him and his family, and for this he gets just normal police protection for protests instead of a special guard, and he can't escape it either, then perhaps the comparison is somewhat "like for like".

Good to see Trump finally condoming the far-right

That Bannon interview is fascinating. It was clearly very well timed and obviously deliberate.
His comments on North Korea, for example:
“There’s no military solution [to North Korea’s nuclear threats], forget it. Until somebody solves the part of the equation that shows me that ten million people in Seoul don’t die in the first 30 minutes from conventional weapons, I don’t know what you’re talking about, there’s no military solution here, they got us.”
That's obviously directed at North Korea as a way of "accidentally" showing their hand, as a means of de-escalation and I'm willing to bet money it works.
Also interesting:
He dismissed the far right as irrelevant and sidestepped his own role in cultivating it: “Ethno-nationalism—it's losers. It's a fringe element. I think the media plays it up too much, and we gotta help crush it, you know, uh, help crush it more.”
“These guys are a collection of clowns,” he added.
From his lips to Trump’s ear.
“The Democrats,” he said, “the longer they talk about identity politics, I got ’em. I want them to talk about racism every day. If the left is focused on race and identity, and we go with economic nationalism, we can crush the Democrats.”
The comment about identity politics and race is interesting because that narrative wont change on the left - that will continually be the main issue and the China trade war and economic stuff will just get ignored.
The whole thing just screams that he's really running the show, which is slightly terrifying. I just don't think they can or will completely disown and condemn the far right nut-jobs and ever manage to loose that association in people's minds.

Not sure if serious.
Good that he is accepting that the far right's behaviour is ok?
Condone means to endorse or accept, it is the opposite of condem.

I find that the link backs don't always take me to relevant posts.
Was this condone/condom?
Aha, now realise cunning spelling. My fail.

The USA has 0 hate speech laws, and even in the UK they don't work well (as unless you ask for violence against a very specific group, nothing happens) so we've had intolerant anti LGBT bigots escaping the law. [though not public opinion obv...]
It would be nice to have a workable definition of intolerance that also covers a toxic media and all that, but does not stifle debate and does not encourage people to complain about intolerance when it's really just hurt feelings and ignoring other people's concerns, and then everyone will happily gloss over bad data and prejudices that need addressed.
Right now little is outside the law, and we can't agree on what intolerance is.
At least Nazis make it easy ... ;)

This is interesting/informative/terrifying etc:
Someone has made a twitter account to mimic Trump's feed:
I really don't think that memo was a major reason behind Nokia's decline. It was years of reading the market wrong and producing phones that weren't attractive to consumers.
That said, the investment companies I work with have a bonk on for Nokia right now. Makes me wonder if there is something up their collective sleeves.
