Try and avoid high fat foods immediately before, during and immediately after the event. Fat takes longer to metabolise and interferes with carb absorption so you can feel full but not get the benefit. Cake is quite high fat :(
You may have only protein cake after the race, and SiS Gel Cake beforehand.
