  • I have missed that turn 3 times. Every time I get to the bottom of the descent and stop to go back up.

  • Get some T(h)NRC practice. :)

  • It is the only climb on the whole route! I often ride out to Ware and back and do it either fixed or just in the big ring. One reason for this route is that it is an easy way out of London. The other is that there are no hills.

  • I recommend that you join AUK and affiliate with club aerocoach as your endeavour would easily make you the first club points champ with 20 points. For this season which ends end of September. Nice motivational crutch? If you require advice how to proceed with this let me know. Next season you then can defend your title against @umop3pisdn

  • Good luck! Looking forward to the updates.

  • Thanks Nano's Heath

  • Did the donate bit, good luck, hope you have mudguards on!!!

  • I'm donating a little bit every day you complete a trip.. good luck Clive.. keep us posted

  • Thank you.

Just ridden up to Cambridge. Lovely route. Took Kitten Lane and ended up 2k short of the 100. Need to look at where I can add 2k each way. May just continue through Stanstead Abbott and towards Ware before turning right towards the Haddams.

    Cafe excellent. Will go back.

Decided to train it home because I am fundamentally lazy and a little knackered.

So the plan is to leave early each day. 6am. Water at High Beech and then ride on through. Refill and eat at the cafe and then back

Day 1. Take it very easy

Day 2. Feel knackered and suffer

Day 3. Total agony. Legs and gooch on fire. Back aching. Feet sore.

Day 4. As day 3 but maybe not quite as bad.

Day 5. Feeling a little better

Days 6-9. Improving by the day.

Day 10. Storm it. PRs on every segment. Then back to LMNH to celebrate over a green tea.

  • Do you have the route mapped out somewhere? I've done the ride to Cambridge a few times and am always on the lookout for route improvements!
Would love to come and ride along, it's a lovely ride!

  • Good luck, Clive - will be watching your progress!

  • Cheers Frank.

A little concerned by the fact that I rode only half the daily distance on Sunday in ideal conditions and am still feeling a little knackered today.

  • You'll find extra motivation when you start the real thing.

If you can get the JustGiving app on your phone. I had it on mine when I was training for my first marathon and the notifications were relayed onto my Garmin watch (Forerunner 920xt but it might be the same with a more modern Edge cycling GPS).

One day I was about 5km from the end of a 28km training run and wishing that the world would swallow me up. I was just thinking about the alternative options for getting home (walking/short-cut/bus) when I got a notification through to my watch that someone else had made a donation. It was just want I needed to remind me why I was doing it and it got me through.

With that in mind I'll make my donation Friday afternoon sometime.

Good luck with it. I've done London to Cambridge and back a lot (it was my fallback DIY 200km Audax ride and sometimes I used to use it to go watch Cambridge United play), never really get tired of that route.

  • Nice one! May try and venture out with you one morning before looping back to go to work......

  • Bonne route, Clive!

Will PM you, but would love to meet you for lunch in Cambridge one day (probably Monday or Wednesday next week).

  • No harm in cutting your cloth to something more manageable and enjoyable.
    Will be following your progress.

  • I've said it to you before and I'll say it again.

    Nutter.

But good luck anyway. If you get a mechanical leaving you stranded, don't be shy about sending out a bat signal. There's plenty of us who live near enough to your route with cars who can come to your aid.

  • Did you sort your routing issue out? There is extra mileage to be had by detouring round Ferneux Pelham. i.e. Keeping on until Stocking Pelham then turning left towards Brent Pelham. They look like nicer lanes than you'd get heading into Ware.

  • Thank you. Good thinking. Will look at that.

  • They are nice roads round the Pelhams, yeah.

  • Have amended route and added those few km. Now slightly over which is fine. Also routed the return which was a sensible thing to do!

Andy, lunch (hopefully an early lunch or elevenses) would be delightful.

TwoTents, for some reason Robin rather than Batman comes to mind.

  • Just realised the extent of that climb on the way back. 400 feet in 12 miles with a max gradient of 5%. Perhaps I need a lower gear than my 34/29.

  • Pop an 11-32 on there. 34/32 should be plenty low enough for that. It's only a 0.6% average.
