  • No, I think you're right Miitch, I do have photos but I can't find my USB so I'm waiting for that replacement to arrive.
I hate my LBS, always let me down, lie about products/stock, quite a lot of mark up too. tbh they have a fairly bad rep ont tinternet, so its not just me, but the mechanics are usually good guys if you get to meet them. I'll suck it up tho if I have to. I can admit defeat, occasionally.
    Cheers man.

I'm guessing I should avoid the neco headset too?

  • Hmm i think this is maybe not a Gitane based on the last photo showing the forkblades..

I picked up another "unknown" frame last week which has the similair forkblades

  • I got a couple of Neco bottom brackets to try something out on the cheap and I needed two identical BBs with metal cups on both sides. That was 4 years ago and the bearings now need replacing after about 8000 miles and 3 winters commuting. I don't think they're bad and the bearings are standard sizes that you can buy off the shelf anywhere.

I totally get your point about LBSs too. Last two places I've lived, my LBSs have been useless/unhelpful/uninterested to the point that I've ended up doing the jobs myself. The one in the next town along was my kind of place, with loads of older bikes hanging up, but the old guy who ran it is retiring and they're almost never open.

  • Thanks Jonny. The Neco is still an option if it fits and I guess I can use it as a spare once I upgrade.
Ye the floppy haired hipster student with a foreign (not yorkshire) accent told me Fibrax stopped making cables on my most recent visit.
Something about bikes attracts the arrogant...

  • Another one to ID, this has me a bit Stumped. Lo-pro 700c rear 650c front

    • Main tubes are extruded and not seam welded, the down tube has been ovalized along the
centre for a more aero tube.
    • Head tube is seam weleded tube with Tange Seki headset
    • Bottom Bracket is ISO 68mm 1.37x24
    • Rear Dropouts are Gipiemme 130mm spacing
    • Front Dropouts unknown, 96mm Spacing
    • Front Fork AKISU 86 for 650c
    • Cast Bottom Bracket XC83 124632 Serial
    • Headtube Lugs Stamped 73 and 430
    • Seatube appears to be 26.4mm
    • Top Tube cut out for internal cabling
    • Chain stays are ovalized and flattened

Like I said, I am a bit stumped, my best guess at the moment is a Kildemoes Cobra, has the same seat stays and the mudguard eyes (very odd on a tt frame) but the colours and seatube are all wrong, it may have had a respray but there is no evidence of this.

  • Can't help you out, but dibs if you ever sell!

  • 653 Reynolds, mono stay track frame, decals Mosquito and forks which say Zeus 200 and possibly 2001 . The forks look older than the frame and cannot find Zeus making mono stay track frames. Any ideas on the builder?

  • Nice score! The front end looks like a raleigh/carlton pro with the zeus fork crown: https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/301367/ not sure about the rear end tho. Any Build plans? Can I haz first refusal if you're ever selling?

  • A lo-pro with mudguard eyelets? The dropouts on the forks look like they're from a 70's entry level gas pipe frame and the brake cable routing in the toptube looks like a diy solution. Could be home-built or sth.

p.s. the gas pipe vibe of the lo pro reminded me of the infamous schauff lancome. Turns out your's is a schauff, too, albeit not a 'lancome' (which is a good thing). http://forum.tour-magazin.de/showthread.php?336418-Schauff-Zeitfahrrad

  • Dunno if this is much to go on, I mainly just wanna know what the screw is for but any ideas what the rest is?
    Its steel
Sort of a nubbin, looks like a paint drip, on the back of the HT too
    Band on FD.

  • I mainly just wanna know what the screw is for...

    It secures the seatpost.

...but any ideas what the rest is?

    It's a bike.

  • Is it, shit the bed?!?!

    So the bikes Pony then...

  • If you gave a full photo of the frame, that would be useful.

Based on what I see, (grub screw and oval tubing),I would say that it is a 1990's MBK Trainer frame.

These came in a variety of Columbus steel options, but it is likely to be Columbus Aelle or Thron since you have mudguard eyes (definitely not SL or SLX).

I have sold fixed up a few in the past and there are a couple of Project Threads from other too so use the search tab.

MBK Trainer / Super Record / Record / etc...

Here is a recent one here:

  • Cheers Vince, that's quite a lot of info to go on. I'll let the guy know.
I thought I'd seen summat similar on here but couldn't recall brands or owt.

  • Paid 140€ yesterday so the girlfriend has a bike, rather than use the one her dad bought her and brother decided to steal.

So it's Italian, called Carrera, running Campag Athena 9 speed, top tube says Alux Made In E.E.C but apart from that I'm at a loss to date it. Should probably check era of the 'genuine gel' saddle and so on. Wheels are SUP rims on Dura Ace (red text) hubs.

Any other useful info? Elsewhere says about 'Podium Carrera' and a lawsuit with Halfords.

Swapped out the LOOK pedals for her, just realised I could probably date roughly from that too.

  • Tidy little machine! Do you think the groupset is original or a later addition? looks late 90s at a guess

  • 97/98 is would be my guess
Looks pretty good to me and Carrera have a fine racing heritage too...

  • Thanks yea. I think it's all original. We bought it on Subito from a guy who was selling on behalf of his wife. It was her father's who is now suffering from dementia.

So the story goes it was around a thousand lira when they bought it, and has sat unused for 10 years because of the illness. So that works for the 97/98 as @Rik_Van_Looy says.

I was too busy checking it over while the girlfriend spoke the Italian, should have asked for more details. I believe it was bought new and untouched (unserviced) apart from the chain being 50 links too short now.

  • For some reason I thought Carrera were Spanish.

Anyway, 9 speed Athena is quite a rare thing: it was only listed in the catalogue in 1998 and 1999 (Athena was dropped from 2000).

So I'd suggest that pins your bike to '98-'00.

A good deal, as I'd guess the groupset is worth what you paid for the bike, likely more.

  • Thought so too, Carbon 9 speed Athena seemed odd. Only similar group on ebay sold at over £100. DA hubs must be worth at least a freddo bar as well.

    Thanks for catalogue info.

  • @pdlouche
yeah - what he said about Athena 9 and also what he said about a good deal.
The reason I went a bit earlier than 00 was the quill stem.
Apart from that it's very similar to my De Rosa which I think is about '99
(Steel fork, low fast-back stays, 9spd campag etc)
