I have no way of knowing if that was the case or not with Hitler, but your argument is valid still. Trump is sufficiently vague and self contradictory to encourage all sorts of interpretations.
I think your argument is that if Hitler was an evil genius followed by naive sheep then any analogy to Trump would not be so relevant, but if Hitler was a bumbling idiot helped forward by sinister and able henchmen, then the relevance to today's USA becomes much more acute.
I lean towards the latter interpretation myself, which makes today's wave of right wing populism seem that much more scary.
