  • I used my sugino 75s for about 5 years on my brooklyn. Only Issue I ever had was when I tried to remove one with my isis crank puller by mistake and stripped the threads. :)

  • no I never snapped a pair. the non drive became progressively less "square". once they start loosening its a 1 way road for square taper cranks. complete crap 2/10 would never ever ever buy again

  • User error. You need to take the crank off regularly and apply grease. About as often as a HT2 BB lasts ;-)

  • Not sure about that

  • You need to take the crank off regularly and apply grease.

    Wat

Not sure about square taper in general but Sugino seems to have a proprietary axle design. That may be one reason why the crank would fail when used with a BB other than the Suginos

  • Company in stating you need to use their expensive option shocker. I've no problem with shimano on mine.

  • Are we already getting into the grease/no grease debate? /derail

  • I've never had any issues with mine and I've used shimano, campy and miche bb's.

  • There is 2 square taper standard:

    -ISO (njs stuff, campagnolo..)
    -JIS (most shimano stuff etc)

If your ride heavily an ISO crank on a JIS bottom for years, it's normal that it fail. The square isn't exactly the same, and don't allow the crankarms to go on correctly..

Using SG75 BB & Campagnolo BB combinated with SG75 since years without issues

Maybe newest BB are stiffer, but GXP bb aren't revognized for their longevity

  • I'm just saying

  • but GXP bb aren't revognized for their longevity

This is also myth. I've used the same GXP BB for nearly 4 years, 5 days a week, all weathers. Its getting slightly gritty now

  • I am sure S75s are fine (as many people here atest to) - I am just saying I would never buy a square taper crank again. there is a reason this technology has been left behind in all other disciplines of cycling....

if you think about the actual forces transferred from crank arm to BB, an interface with a higher surface area (and therefore distribution of force) will always last longer. it is actually very simple - hence manufacturers moving away from square taper, leaving it for the likes of cheap shit halfords carreras

  • I've seen plenty of GXP bearings died due to salty winter slush in Montreal (not only GXP I admit) or due to overtightening, maybe it fucked up my opinion..

I would love to try Omnium with CK or hope cups and Zen chainring, this should be ace

  • there is a reason this technology has been left behind in all other disciplines of cycling....

I wholeheartedly agree, just wanted to add some nuance to your statements. In the end, to each his own of course!

  • Afaik Sheldon's musings on jis/iso have been debunked.

The taper is exactly the same, one has a chamfer at the end of the axle which accounts for the difference in axle length and chainline etc.

Tldr, you can use ISO cranks on jis bottom brackets and vice versa and the world will not implode.

  • What have I started.....

  • Yes or no.... disco hub to archetype
