  • Are people really snapping square taper BBs regularly from street riding ?

I've ridden 40,000 plus miles in the last 4 years on square taper without issues, and countless years of mountain biking before that, mainly on square taper, no problem. I also used the shimano hollow tech stuff when it first came out, because it looked flash/new it might have been stiff, but not massively so, the bearing life wasn't great compare to square taper.

  • no I never snapped a pair. the non drive became progressively less "square". once they start loosening its a 1 way road for square taper cranks. complete crap 2/10 would never ever ever buy again

  • User error. You need to take the crank off regularly and apply grease. About as often as a HT2 BB lasts ;-)

  • There is 2 square taper standard:

    -ISO (njs stuff, campagnolo..)
    -JIS (most shimano stuff etc)

If your ride heavily an ISO crank on a JIS bottom for years, it's normal that it fail. The square isn't exactly the same, and don't allow the crankarms to go on correctly..

Using SG75 BB & Campagnolo BB combinated with SG75 since years without issues

Maybe newest BB are stiffer, but GXP bb aren't revognized for their longevity
